Hug Your Brain
Last week in Hug Your Brain our 6th grade student began to learn parts of the brain. Although our brain doesn't work in segments we want students to understand there are components of the brain that support emotion and thinking.
Brain Stem: It's the most primitive part of our brain.
It's always monitoring to ensure our saftey and regulates
our temperature, breathing and hearbeat.
When we are angry it moves us to Fight or Flight Mode
Limbic System: It controls our emotions - verbal and nonverbal. Our attention, motivation, relationships all function from here.
Our sleep and eating cycles function from here and our memories stored.
PreFrontal Lobe: The developmental need is to problem solve. This is where we are most able to learn, be creative, have self control, able to plan, prioritize, sustain working memory.
We want our children to be able to know strategies to be able to 'upload' and be in this area of the brain for optimal learning to occur!
LIFT Programming
LIFT after-school programming continued this week, with Laker Middle Schoolers participating in five more days of fun. On Monday, Mrs. Morgan came in to help us create some crafts - crafts that have an exciting purpose we'll share in the coming weeks! The rest of the week, we had Corn Hole and Yahtzee tournaments, and ended the week with Team Yoga bringing us into our weekend being mindful and grateful.
Next week we'll be crafting with Mrs. Morgan & Mrs. Nadlicki - creating more art with a purpose, apple picking, making apple pies, and ending the week with a Harry Potter movie night.
Remember, Middle Schoolers are welcome to join Mrs. Murphy in the LIFT room (as long as their permission form is complete) from dismissal till 5:30 p.m. every Monday - Friday. Take a look at our October calendar in the attached PDF, and we'll see you soon!

Student, Parent, Teacher Conferences - October 19 & 20
On October 19 & 20th we will be holding Student, Parent & Conferences for Middle School. Our conferences this year will be led by your child and facilitated by the teachers. The students will be sharing their strengths, areas of weaknesses, points of celebrations, and much more. It's important that our students voices are heard and they can share their progress, goals, and proficiency!
We want families to attend and learn more about your child's progress, confidence and success. However, If you feel comfortable and confident at this time don't feel you must attend.
Essential Skills
Next week our students will be taking a self assessment to see where they are with Essential Skills neessary to have an optimal learning state. These essential skills fall under broad categories: Self Awareness, Social Awareness, Self Management, Responsible Decision Making and Relationships. This short assessment will help the students and staff know where to focus on in regards to teachable strategies. Example: How to prioritize time, how to organize homework, how to use a big or assertive voice when solving a conflict, asking for help, and other developmental skills our adolescents need. If you don't want your child to take part in this assessment, please email Rocheleaud@mylakers.org
