Spheros at Shimek
Your child probably came home last week talking about playing with a Sphero. A Sphero is a programmable robotic ball that can be controlled with an iPad or a phone. I borrowed four Spheros from the district and we interacted with them during library the past two weeks. Ask your student what they did with the Sphero!
Library Learning
Kindergarten: The kindergartners finished up Read Around the Library by hearing the fiction book, Stink The Incredible Shrinking Kid by McDonald. They loved hearing about Stink was worried about his height and his adventures with a newt. We also played with the Sphero - Animal Toss and Hot Potato.
In the lab, we completed our ABC book using Story Maker on abcya.com. If you would like to see the completed book, click here: http://anyflip.com/rghy/ysns/
The students worked very hard typing and drawing!

Second Grade: As part of Read Around the Library, the second grade students learned the proper way to read a graphic novel. We then read the very funny graphic novel by Green, Hippopotamister. Ask your student about Hippopotamister's adventures with the red panda. We also played with the Sphero - driving it, playing Hot Potato and Animal Toss, and then programming the Sphero to roll in a square pattern.

Third Grade: The third grade students started the month by completing an online scavenger hunt for animal facts using the PebbleGo website. We then read a few new biographies in the Shimek collection: Anything But Ordinary Addie, about the Queen of Magic, Adelaide Herrmann, I Dissent, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Radiant Child, about street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The third graders also drove the Sphero around and then programmed it to roll in a square pattern.

Fourth Grade: The fourth graders spent their month researching for their state project. The used the Britannica Online and Culturegrams websites, as well as paper encyclopedias and state books. The fourth graders also learned how to transform notes into sentences. They learned how to write a bibliography for each of the various resources, too. They then put it all together in Google Slides to present to students and parents.
The students also got to drive the Sphero and program it to roll in a square. They also learned how to program the Sphero using loops, and also how to add lights and sounds to the Sphero as it rolled.
