Monday Memo
News, Ideas, and Resources for High Schools
Literacy across content areas
After you have provided a purpose for reading, there are a number of strategies you can use during reading to keep your students on track, and aid with what you have planned for after reading.
- A Graphic organizer can help readers focus on concepts and how they are related to other concepts.
- Answering text-dependent questions helps to focus students on key information as they read. Questions should be spaced throughout the reading.
- Monitoring/Clarifying
- Double-Entry Journals
- Seed discussion builds higher order thinking and communication.
- To incorporate cooperative learning while reading, try a jigsaw.
Consider the content of the lesson:
- Is the text challenging? If so, choose an activity that will require students to stop periodically as they read, reflect about what they have read, and self-monitor for understanding.
- Does the text structure present challenges to student understanding? If so, consider chunking (dividing into small sections) the text and choosing an activity that will allow small collaborative reading and sharing of the text to identify important information before large group discussion.
The teachers role during reading is to circulate and facilitate in order to guide content learning.
Skyward Update
Starting Monday, October 23rd the “missing assignment” notification in Family and Student Access will not be triggered until 5 days after the assignment is due in the gradebook. This is a change from the current setting of the notification being sent the day the assignment is due. This will allow teachers 5 days to grade assignments and enter them in the gradebook before notification is sent of a missing assignment.
