Where The Meaning Came From
--Together, Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth, where they lived, to a city, named Bethlehem, to register for a census that was ordered by Caesar Augustus, the Roman Emperor. After several days of traveling, Mary and Joseph saw that there was no place to stay because the inn was full. They spent the night, where they kept the animals, in a stable. That night, Mary bore Baby Jesus. They laid him in a manger, a feeding trough for the animals.
--At the same time, some shepherds were in the fields of Bethlehem, watching their sheep. An angel appeared to them, too, telling them the good news that a Savior had just been born. When the angel told them where Jesus was, a great multitude of angels came down from the heavens, saying, "Glory to God, peace on earth, goodwill toward all men!" The shepherds traveled into the city and found Jesus in the manger. After visiting, they spread the word of this new King.
Later that night, some Wise men were traveling and saw a star, different than all the others, that pointed down into the city of Bethlehem, symbolizing the new birth of the new king. They hurried, together, to worship him, bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
