Happy Birthday!

The true meaning of Christmas

2 Days 'til Christmas!

When this saying is said around the world, people are suddenly filled with rushing excitement, thinking about waking up to see a room filled with presents in green and red packages with silver and gold bows tied on top. They think about family coming over, and enjoying time together. They think about the cookies that they will make with grandma and the songs they will sing with far away cousins. All of these things are beautiful but they are not what you should think about when you hear that Christmas is coming.

The link above tells of Santa Claus, himself, coming down the chimney on Christmas Eve to see a parent in the room. But Santa was not happy. His cheeks weren't rosy. His eyes didn't sparkle. There was no spring in his step. He had lost his "jolliness". Click on the link to read this beautiful story of the true meaning of Christmas.

Where The Meaning Came From

--Long, long ago, almost 2,000 years ago, an angel appeared to a woman to tell her that she, a virgin, would be having a son, soon. The angel, Gabriel, said that she was to name him Jesus, and he was the son of god. Mary, the woman's name, was confused and surprised that she, of all people, was chosen to be the earthly mother of King. She told her husband-to-be, Joseph, of the news. He was just as surprised as she was.

--Together, Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth, where they lived, to a city, named Bethlehem, to register for a census that was ordered by Caesar Augustus, the Roman Emperor. After several days of traveling, Mary and Joseph saw that there was no place to stay because the inn was full. They spent the night, where they kept the animals, in a stable. That night, Mary bore Baby Jesus. They laid him in a manger, a feeding trough for the animals.

--At the same time, some shepherds were in the fields of Bethlehem, watching their sheep. An angel appeared to them, too, telling them the good news that a Savior had just been born. When the angel told them where Jesus was, a great multitude of angels came down from the heavens, saying, "Glory to God, peace on earth, goodwill toward all men!" The shepherds traveled into the city and found Jesus in the manger. After visiting, they spread the word of this new King.

Later that night, some Wise men were traveling and saw a star, different than all the others, that pointed down into the city of Bethlehem, symbolizing the new birth of the new king. They hurried, together, to worship him, bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
