Passover Freedom Seder
Brought to you by Nazareth Hillel ~ Wednesday, April 4
Join President Braveman and Nazareth Hillel for the Annual Campus Passover Seder this Year Reflecting on Dr. King’s Ongoing Legacy 50 Years after his Assassination
In 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was planning to take part in a Passover Seder with the family of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who marched and prayed and struggled alongside him against racism and militarism in America. But ten days before the Seder, Dr. King was assassinated at 6:01CT on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenessee.
The following year, during Passover of 1969, Jews and African Americans came together on the first anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination to remember him. A seder with readings that connected the Jewish exodus from Egypt with the struggle for Civil Rights in America and Social Justice around the world seemed the perfect way to commemorate, celebrate, and call to action. This seder became know as the "Freedom Seder".
Fifty years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and forty-nine years after that first Freedom Seder, Passover and the anniversary of King's death will intersect on April 4, 2018. On that day, Nazareth College Hillel will celebrate a "Freedom Seder" of its own on campus to celebrate Passover and to take time to reflect on Dr. King’s ongoing legacy.
The Passover seder is probably the most celebrated and beloved of Jewish home rituals. Most Jews have cherished memories of past family times spent at a seder. It is believed that the obligation to tell the story of the Exodus was observed by Jewish ancestors ever since the actual Exodus itself.
All are welcome to join President Braveman and Nazareth Hillel for the Annual Campus Passover Seder. The Seder will be led by Nazareth Hillel advisor Cantor Sam Asher.
