Newsletter 8, Week 5 Term 2
Waiau School ⎪ 2nd June 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te whānau,
Where has the first half of this term gone? Time certainly flies by when you are busy! Our tamariki have had an action packed fortnight.
We have farewelled Autumn and are now officially in the Winter season.
Here are some of our highlights...
- Hurunui Cross Country for six senior room students (8 students were eligible - unfortunately illness prevented two students participating).
- Dr Mara Elton came to visit and perform a dissection on a lamb’s brain right in front of an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers.
- Completing our Zones of Regulation monsters with our buddies. The Zones of Regulation is about learning strategies to keep ourselves in the optimal zone for learning, or if we are distracted/upset, how we can get ourselves refocused independently. It’s all about self regulation and our students have come up with some great ideas that they can try.
- Celebrating and acknowledging our volunteers that helped make our Trail Ride such a success this year at the BBQ on Sunday afternoon.
- Watching our second ever ‘What’s up Waiau’ video news report at Hui.
- Illustrating and writing over 70 thank you cards for the team of volunteers.
- Staff undertaking additional learning through regular zoom meetings and online learning.
- Working with the other schools in our Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning).
- Kapa Haka it’s great to see our school come together and fully engage with our Kapa Haka sessions led by Courts. I managed to pop in and believe me when our tamariki presented the Waiau Haka it sent shivers down my spine. The passion that goes into their pukana (faces at the end of the haka) is formidable.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend.
Ngā mihi nui,
Megan

Hurunui Cross Country
Waiau School was represented by 6 strong cross country runners at the Hurunui Cross Country on Tuesday 31st, held at the Scargill Domain.
Our Waiau team consisting of Quinn, Victoria, Frank, Henry, Miah, and Kenzie represented our school with pride and resilience. They pushed through to produce outstanding results, for which they should all be very proud of.
Quinn 3rd Year 6 boys, Victoria 3rd Year 6 girls, Miah 4th Year 5 girls have all made it through to the Canterbury Cross Country event later in June in Christchurch.
Thank you to Tammi, Rebekah and Courts for providing transport and lots of support to our runners.
Amuri Area School Reading Workshops
Dear Parents
Reading Together Workshop
We would really like you to consider taking part in our Reading Together workshop programme for parents. I am sure you will find it of great help for yourself and your child(ren), as you support their education. We all know how important reading is for children to succeed. One of the things that really helps children to become good readers is support from home. The Reading Together workshops will show you best how to do this. A huge number of parents nationwide have already attended these workshops and found the programme very helpful, indeed we have already run four very successful workshops here at Amuri Area School.
The programme consists of four workshops – each 1 hour and 15 minutes. To make the most of this opportunity it is important that you attend all of the workshops if you can.
These are the proposed dates:
Session 1 Wednesday 8th of June 7.00pm – 8.15pm (For parents only – light food provided) – In Te Kooti
Session 2 Wednesday 15th of June 7.00pm – 8.15pm (For parents and children – light food provided) – In the Library (We will discuss the time on the first evening and make it earlier if possible.)
Session 3 Wednesday 22nd of June 7.00pm – 8.15pm (For parents only – light food provided) In the Library
Session 4 Wednesday 29th of June 7.00pm – 8.15pm (For parents only light food provided) In the Library
The programme is FREE! We can even help with childcare costs if you need it and it will REALLY help your children to become much better readers. In particular, it helps children to UNDERSTAND what they are reading, and helps you to form strong bonds and make reading a positive family experience.
Please see http://www.readingtogether.net.nz for more information and the significant positive research on this programme. We are looking forward to your participation.
Please register by emailing kirsten@amuri.school.nz or phoning the school office. Should you need further information I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you have taken a rapid antigen test (RAT), report your positive result online or by calling the helpline. 0800 222 478 (choose option 3)
You are eligible for extra assistance and by registering your covid result, the local medical centre will make contact to inform you of help available.
Homework
Homework- Room 1 has a weekly homework letter with lots of information on it to keep you informed of what is going on and how you can help your child consolidate their learning.
Room 2 has spelling words and maths bricks to learn and revise. The expectation is that Room 2 pupils will read independently for 20 minutes each day. The students select library books to keep at home for this purpose. Practising times tables will be very beneficial too.
