Board Meeting Details

This regular Board of Education meeting was held in person at the District Office with no pandemic-related capacity limit. In-person public comment was available for attendees.

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m.

2. Approval of Meeting Agenda

The agenda was approved.

3. Recognition: What's Good in 109

Superintendent Simeck shared highlights from around the six DPS 109 schools.


Highlights include:

-Kindy Round-Up across the district

- Kipling artists

- South Park guest librarians

- Early Learners ABC Countdown

- Walden philanthropy fair, bagel breakfast and honoring our Destination Imagination global 3rd place winner

- Wilmot is the featured presenter this month!

4. Legislative Update

Congressman Brad Schneider attends to deliver a legislative update. Discussed the current status of gun control bills in the House and Senate. Discussed addressing the challenges of mental health.


President Montgomery thanked Congressman Schneider for his visit and his support of COVID funding for schools through the pandemic.

5. Superintendent's Report

Mr. Simeck spoke on school shootings and issues surrounding firearms causing the death of students. Mr. Simeck invited Dr. Fillipi to speak about DPS109's safety and emergency procedures. He thanked Congressman Schneider for his participation in the Board of Education meeting and involvement with the community.


Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Ms. Ford summarizes COVID-19 SHEILD numbers currently. Ms. Ford thanked parents for submitting at-home tests, reporting symptoms to the building nurse, and keeping children home if they're feeling unwell.


Dr. Dale Fisher noted that we continue to have difficulty finding substitutes due to COVID-19-positive staff shortages.


Mr. Simeck congratulated upcoming graduates of Caruso Middle School and Shepard Middle School on May 31.

6. Community Participation Relative to Matters on the Meeting Agenda (Policy 2:230)

DHS student made public comment.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

7.1. Freedom of Information Requests (Policy 2:250)

Dr. Filippi said there are five requests in the packet that have been addressed.

7.2. Science & Social Studies Curriculum Update

Ms. Arnold introduced the K-8 Leadership Team committee members to present updates. See full presentation below:

7.3. ISBE Consolidated District Plan for Federal Grant Application and Management

Ms. Ford presented an informational item; ISBE Consolidated District Plan for Federal Grant Application and Management.

7.4. Architect of Record - Arcon Associates

Dr. Filippi presented that there were 12 responses which were narrowed to 3 finalists. Arcon Associates was selected from the three finalists. Arcon will begin with new work and the current architects will complete the Caruso Auditorium and other current projects.

7.5. FY22 Amended Budget

Dr. Filippi proposed an amended budget in response primarily in anticipation of bills anticipated for the Caruso Auditorium.

7.6. Resolution to Set a Public Hearing - Interfund Transfer from Education Fund to Operations & Maintenance Fund

Dr. Filippi described the resolution to set a public hearing to allow an interfund transfer from the education fund to the operations & maintenance Fund

Mrs. Jakymiw reported on True North's budget update.


The Policy Committee received a PRESS packet with recommendations and will be planning a meeting for the future.

10. Open Community Participation (Policy 2:230)

There were no speakers present.

11. Board/Superintendent Other

President Montgomery made a statement in response to the school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas. Expressed appreciation to Dr. Filippi, Ms. Ford, Ms. Arnold, Dr. Fisher, and for all their work for tonight's meeting. The students from Wilmot did an amazing job presenting and being the pilot program.


Mr. Simeck congratulated Dr. Bialk for earning his doctorate degree.
