News from Glenwood

Enjoy your three day weekend! Our staff will be busy learning at Alverno College on Monday. We look forward to seeing the kids back at school on Tuesday, January 19th.

Pizza and a Show

The Glenwood PTO is sponsoring "Pizza & A Show" tonight . Join us for a night of food, magic and fun, featuring magician, comedian and illusionist Glen Gerard.

If you have already signed up for pizza, we will see you at 5:30. If you forgot to sign up, no worries, you can still come for the show. Be here for the show by 6:15.

Readers Workshop

We have implemented new "Units of Study" in reading this year. In grades K-5, you will hear about your students being introduced to new reading skills and strategies in a mini-lesson each day. Students are given multiple times to practice skills and strategies during their independent reading time. When students are independently reading, the teacher is meeting with students individually and small groups to assist them.

Students also have times when they read with a partner or a book club. Reading to partners helps build fluency as well as allows for discussions about the reading.

At the end of the workshop, students get a chance to share. This could be another way to follow up on the mini-lesson and share what they have practiced.

I have noticed kids reading a lot in our readers workshop at all grade levels. The best way to get better at reading is to read. You can support what is happening at home by reading with your child at home. I have three kids of my own in elementary school and we end each day before bed with stories. It is one of our favorite family things to do!

Jersey Mike's Fundraiser

This month's GPTO Dining Fundraiser is Jersey Mike's. For those who already ordered and received cards, all you need do is visit the Jersey Mike's at 7925 W. Layton Ave. from January 19th through the 22nd and present your card and pay $3.00 to get your sub. 100% of the proceeds will profit the GPTO. In the event you did not order a card in advance, please know a limited amount of extra cards will be available at Glenwood beginning January 19th.

What a great fundraiser, you get a $3.00 sub and you help support our students at Glenwood! Thank you for your support!

Question of the Weekend

I started a "Question of the Weekend" at Glenwood. The question is posted outside my office on a whiteboard each Friday. Students who are curious about the question and want to answer the question can turn in their answers on Monday in the black mailbox next to the whiteboard outside of my office.

This weekend's question is, "How is chocolate made?"

Good luck researching! Have fun!
