Northland Career Center News
Parent/Guardian Newsletter
To all our NCC parents, partners, and friends,
It has been a great start to the school year and it is hard to believe that it will be October tomorrow. Most of our programs have settled into their daily routines and we see learning occurring when we are in our classrooms, shops, and labs. School feels about as normal as it has felt since before the pandemic. We look forward to October and know it will be a busy month with field trips, career fairs, school visits, and so much more. Be sure to read further to check out the upcoming events.

Our Program - Industrial Welding
The Industrial Welding program provides the opportunity to develop competence in welding procedures and practices. Students who successfully complete the program will have an opportunity to take the Welder Performance Qualification test as established by the American Welding Society and the D1.1 Structural Welding Code-Steel.
To complete all the required skills, high school students attend three hours per day for one or two school years.
Our Instructor - Mr. Curt Claycomb
Mr. Claycomb began teaching at NCC in August, 2003, and has been a member of the American Welding Society and Certified Welding Inspector and Educator (CWI/CWE) since 2019.
He graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a BS in Secondary Education, as well as Industrial Technology and has attained a 99-year Vocational Certification.
He has worked in the field as a welder and is also an instructor in the Career Center's Welding Adult Education program.
Our Alum - Mr. Matthew Harding
While at NCC, Matthew was involved in several class projects including working on the Imeson Park Platte Woods walking trail bridge, which he credits as being a great memory and learning experience.
"The NCC Industrial Welding program has helped me a ton after graduation," Matthew said. "I was able to learn skills in the program that helped me get a job."
Matthew said he would recommend NCC to anyone wanting to learn a highly valued trade.
"The teachers in all programs are very helpful and they really care about their students," Matthew said. "Best of all the teachers at NCC care about the success of their students after graduation."

Our Program - KC Tech Academy at NCC
KC Tech Academy at Northland Career Center allows students to earn dual credit toward an Associate Degree and/or certification in a variety of areas related to the manufacturing industry (For example; CAD, CNC, HVAC, Industrial Electrical, Industrial Maintenance, Major Appliance Technology, Millwright, Welding and more). Cutting edge technology has changed the way products are manufactured in the United States and abroad. These changes have increased the need for specialized careers in the development and maintenance of the computers/machines that produce the goods we use on a daily basis.
This program utilizes a variety of lab space and equipment to assist students in choosing the manufacturing career that is right for them. Internship opportunities during the 2nd semester of a student’s second year are available for the qualified candidate.
Our Instructor - Mr. Roy Sayre
He studied Industrial Maintenance at MCC Business and Technology Center early in his career. The chances are good that if it has something to do with manufacturing or production technology, he's either done it or been part of a team working on it. He's also had the privilege to work with Oak Park High School Robotics as a mentor for the past several years.
Our Alum - Mr. Brett J. Baggerly
Brett said his decision to attend KC Tech Academy came down to interest in robots and the technical skills involved in the class like electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, robotics, lathes, mills, soldering and more. He immersed into his education and it paid off, Brett said.
"I got involved by making sure I gave my best effort and tried to learn as much as I could while I was there," he said. "I got involved in the second semester with an internship at Premium Waters and learned a lot of on the job skills. With doing an internship that really helped me take stuff we learned from in class and use it at work and to see how the little things we learned mattered."
Everyday Brett goes into work, he says he learnings something new and it relates back to NCC.
"When I went to NCC I never thought it would have put me where I am today, but it has and I benefit from it everyday with having my mind open to different machines and how they work," he said. "All of it goes back to the basics."
Brett said that NCC provides job experience that is relevant in the professional setting and that he recommends attending for the competitive advantage among peers.
