Viola

Viola (Movie)

Viola's Identity

The Viola in the movie is a girl who really likes to play soccer. Viola had dressed like her brother so she could play soccer since her high school cut the girls soccer team. " Can you make me to look like my brother" (She's the Man). Viola said this because she wanted to be as Sebastian so she could play soccer. She had gone to Sebastian's high school dressed like him to play the soccer game she wanted. While at Sebastian's school she had to hide her looks but her identity stayed mostly the same. Viola was just really herself to look like her brother to play soccer so her identity didn't change when she was there, just her looks.

Viola's Gender

Viola's real gender is still her gender but just hidden to play soccer with the guys. Even though Viola doesn't act like a women like girl, she is really like a tom boy. While she was at Illyria it was hard trying to hide her gender because she would have to take a shower at some point. Also in the locker room she couldn't get dressed with the other guys. With hiding her gender she had to dress like her brother to look like a boy.

Viola's perception from others

Who other people see viola, they see her as a boy depending on the people. So their perception on Viola is that she is a boy that likes to play soccer. How Viola sees herself is that she is a girl that likes to play soccer and would even join the boys team to play. "Just because you have long hair doesn't make you a girl" (She's the Man). This quote shows that the guys on the soccer team think that Viola is a boy.

similarities and differences shared with Viola

Similarities that me and my character have is that we both like to play a sport. The sport I like to play is Bowling. When ever I have a time to go bowling I like to go bowling with my best friend. that is a little like how viola would play soccer, when ever the time she has to play soccer, she would.

Differences that me and my character have is that she would even join the boys team just to play. With me I wouldn't join the girls team just to play because I think that is a little too much.

Viola (play)

Viola's Identity

Viola in the play is a girl who is loyal to the person that she is in love with. when she wanted to work for Olivia she heard that she wouldn't let anyone in because she was in morning. so she had heard that Orsino needed someone to work for him put he only hires men, so Viola had to hide her identity to become a worker for Orsino. However her inside identity staid the same but her outside changed. Even though she had to dress like a boy, which was her brother, she still like girl stuff because her personal identity never changed. in the need of the play every one was in the same place and the truth had to come out on Viola. Viola had said to everyone, " If nothing lets to make us happy both but this my masculine usurped attire, do not embrace me till each circumstance of place, time, fortune, do cohere and jump that I am Viola" (V.I.240-244). When Viola said this she is trying to tell the others that she is really a girl.

Viola's Gender

Since Viola had to dress like a guy that does not mean her gender changed. She had to hide her gender in order to get a job with Orsino. A limitation that she has about being like a guy is that she can't tell Orsino that she loves him. A benefit about being dressed like a guy is that she can work for Orsino. However when she is dressed like a guy and has to talk to Olivia, Olivia falls in love with Cesario/Viola. Olivia had said to Malvolio," Run after that peevish messenger, The country's man. He left this ring behind him, would I or not. Tell him I'll none of it" (I.v.275-277). This tells that Olivia thinks that Viola is a guy Not knowing her gender, and so she likes him/her.

Viola's perception from others

The people that work around Viola they think that Viola is a boy. When Olivia has Cesario come back, she really thinks that Viola is a guy. So the perception from the others, really think Viola is a guy so they have do guy stuff like sword fighting. With Olivia saying, "He left this ring behind him, would I or not. Tell him I'll none of it" (I.v.275-277). Olivia's perception about Viola is that she thinks she is a guy so she acts like if Viola is a guy and starts to like him/her.

similarities and differences shared with Viola

Similarities that me and Viola have is little. One thing though is that she was working hard for the people she likes. I also work hard when people have me do stuff. Differences we have is that, when Viola dressed like a guy to get the job that she wanted. If I had a job that I liked but had to look like the other gender, I wouldn't do it.
