SELF-REGULATION
Managing Emotions & Impulses
As our students deepen their new friendships, build stamina for learning, and spend more time interacting with peers in student-directed activities (i.e., lunch, recess, snack breaks, etc.), we are noticing that they would benefit from some additional support in the development of self-regulation.
Self-regulation can be defined as the act of managing one’s thoughts and feelings to engage in positive and purposeful actions such as organizing behavior, controlling impulses, and solving problems constructively. Students with strong self-regulation skills enjoy mental health and emotional wellbeing as well as better academic achievement and physical health. Self-regulation is also a lifelong skill which leads to socioeconomic success.
Self-regulation is influenced by temperament and genetics, but self-regulation skills can also be taught and influenced by caregiver support -- particularly parents and teachers.
Strategies parents can use to teach skills of self-regulation include:
- If your child has difficulty with self-regulation in certain situations or activities, pare down the activity so it is doable (i.e., A one hour play-date [or pickup basketball game] versus a three hour play-date [or basketball game].)
- When children engage in impulsive or inappropriate behavior, provide non-emotional feedback -- What went wrong, why it was wrong and how they can fix it next time.
- Assist children in identifying the level of their emotional reactions to events (i.e., "On a scale of 1 to 10, how upset are you?") Parents can assist children in recognizing if their emotional response "matched" the situation.
- Model how to manage thoughts and feelings when faced with life's daily challenges.
- Lastly, don't avoid situations that are difficult for children to handle. Coach kids through these situations and provide a supportive framework until they can handle these challenges on their own.
Our students will continue to grow their skills of self-regulation (and academics) with patience, clear expectations, non-emotional feedback and explicit teaching of managing thoughts and feelings by both teachers and caregivers.
For more information on self-regulation, see the following resources: Seven Key Principles of Self-Regulation and Self Regulation in Context, How Can We Help Kids With Self-Regulation? and How to Teach Self-Regulation.
A Message From Miss DiNardo, School Counselor
I am pleased to inform you that the CYMCA will again be providing their counseling services to our district. The program works with your insurance carrier. A positive aspect of the CYMCA is that the sessions continue through the summer.
If you are interested in learning more about CYMCA, or would like to secure their services for your child, please contact me at ddinardo@trschools.
As always, if you need assistance with outside resources of any sort for your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
I will be at Washington Street School on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at Cedar Grove Wednesdays through Fridays, so email is the most efficient way to contact me.
Hoping you have a healthy (in mind and body), happy, successful school year!
