Our Learning
Literacy:
This week, we began unit 4 in literacy. The focus is on perspective and our essential question is "How do we really know what happened in the past?" The students are analyzing the text to determine the tone and mood, as well as the author's perspective and how the author's feelings can affect how the story is told.
In writing, the students are beginning to dive into memoirs. A memoir is a personal narrative that focuses on a memory that they feel has impacted their life. We are looking at examples and determining the characteristics of a memoir and how a memoir is different than a personal narrative.
Math Workshop
The fifth grade students are finishing up Unit 5: Best Buys, Ratios, and Rates - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions. Next week, we will be continuing our work with equivalence and the adding of subtracting of fractions.
The Big Ideas for This Unit Were:
- fractions express relationships --the size or amount of the whole matters
- fractions may represent division
- to maintain equivalence , the ratio of the related numbers must be kept constant
- equivalence is preserved when corresponding equivalent parts are combined
- to compare, add or subtract fractions a common whole is needed
Differentiated Math Work
Science
We have done several experiments on discovering why gases can be considered matter. Fifth graders have learned that even though we can't see gases they do take up space and have mass.
The essential question : What are the properties of Matter?
NGSS Performance Expectation(s)
Next Generation Science Standards
5-PS1-1. Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
5-PS1-2. Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.
5-PS1-3. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties
5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Mrs. Edwards' January Guidance Lesson
This month, the classroom guidance lesson addresses anger management and developing coping skills. Students will learn to identify different emotions and strategies to help them manage their emotions. Coping skills help improve mental well-being and strengthen our abilities to handle difficult situations. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
