Appreciation Message from Superintendent Wenzel
Dear Staff and ASD Families:
My family and I stood on the corner of 10th & Commercial on Wednesday afternoon as our Cap Sante and Anacortes High School graduates paraded by in their cars and trucks. The kids were beaming. The crowd was cheering. It was a poignant culmination to a challenging and unexpected year.
As I watched the vehicles pass, I witnessed several parents with tears streaming down their cheeks. Later, a number of them shared how honored they and their children felt by the community's response. The impact of coming together to celebrate students -- after so many weeks of forced separation -- seems to have moved many. It reminded me once again of the value of community.
Despite the adversity of the times, we successfully graduated 174 AHS and 32 Cap Sante students. It was the biggest Cap Sante class in the history of ASD.
Graduation always appeals to me as an important symbol of our shared commitment and lifelong work as educators. Here are these young men and women who so many across the district have helped shape and support over the years. We've seen them laugh and cry; succeed and fail; grow and grow.
I know how hard these last few months have been for so many staff members and families in Anacortes. For the first time in 100 years, we closed schools mid-year. Despite the challenges, we all rallied to do the best we could. We provided food, childcare, mental health support and continued learning. Parents took on the challenge of teaching at home. And the community continued to support families with weekend food, learning materials and scholarships.
I'm proud of our staff and their resilience in moving to online learning. Beyond adapting to new programs and tech tools to deliver instruction, they reached out to families in so many ways -- with calls, cards, books, art supplies, Internet hot spots and so much more. Thank you staff for your extraordinary care.
On July 1, Dr. Justin Irish takes the helm as school superintendent. I've had the opportunity to work closely with him the last several months, and I'm very excited to see where his leadership can take the district in the years ahead. He's a man of compassion, integrity and vision. I've told him time and again what an amazing community and staff you are.
As our family of five takes leave of Anacortes for distant shores, I want to thank you all for the partnership, kindness and support you've showed us over the years. When we arrived in 2013, we had a hope of what life would be like here. Reality has surpassed it many times over.
Please take good care of yourselves and take time in the coming weeks to enjoy family, friends and this amazing corner of the northwest.
Thank you all.
Mark Wenzel
Juneteenth Commemoration
Join us in recognizing Juneteenth - the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, memorializing the day that news of the Civil War's ending reached Galveston, Texas, and 250,000 enslaved Texans found out that they had been free for over two years. 155 years later, we clearly have much more work to do to combat racism, bias, and hate.
The Anacortes School District is committed to doing the hard work: to educate, to learn, to listen, and to act.
We invite you to join us in learning more.
