Who Did The KKK Go After?
The KKK went after newly freed African Americans. They would bomb churches, schools, and damage any symbols that showed black and white people being equal. The also didn't like that African Americans were equal. January 1871, 500 masked man broke into a jail and lynched (hanged) 5 African Americans.
Why Did it Start?
They started because they didn't like that African Americans were now thought of as an equal. So they wanted to create fear and violence to all the newly freed African Americans.
In the 1960s the KKK would bomb African American schools, churches, and places that had symbolism that White and Black people being equal. January 1871, in South Carolina, 500 masked men broke into a jail and lynched (hanged) 8 African Americans.
Who Was The Leader of The KKK?
The first leader was Nathan Bedford Forrest or "Grand Wizard" . Nathan was a general for the Confederacy Army in the Civil War. If you are on the Confederacy Army in the Civil War means you don't want slavery to end. And his troop was actually slaves. Nathan died 1877 at age 56.
