Monthly Theme: Emotion Management & Cooperation
Sibley students have been working really hard on the Emotion Management unit of our SEL Second Step Lessons. First they learned how to identify their own feelings by physical clues in their bodies. They learned that all feelings are natural - even if they are uncomfortable. Staying in control of those emotions and actions helps everyone get along better and be successful at school.
Calming down emotions that are getting out of control helps everyone think more clearly so they can avoid negative consequences. Students have learned one of the best ways to calm down is using belly breathing. Belly breathing is slow, centered deep breathing. This technique helps to activate a relaxation response which reduces heart rate and blood pressure allowing the "thinking" part of the brain to make good choices.
Parent Tip
Spring Break is fast approaching! There will be no school for students the week of March 13th-17th. Our community has different opportunities for students to participate in, here are just a few to consider . . .
--Seekers Wild for our outdoor enthusiasts!
--Hula-Hoop Flow via Community Ed!
--Swim. Skate. Climb. Spring break fun!! via Community Ed, Park & Rec, and the AL Family Y
Other ideas to do at home!
--Paint rocks
--Take a walk and have a nature scavenger hunt around the neighborhood
--Create an outdoor obstacle course
--Play a board game marathon (or create your own board game!)
--Craft and create! (make your own playdough or Google some St. Patrick's Day crafts)
--Child/adult meal planning and prep together! Have your child set the menu for an entire day and help each other grocery shop and cook it.
--Read some good books together . . . or just side-by-side.
