Power Walks

Highlights for Power Walks

  • Use academic comments to recognize and reinforce learning in the classroom. Use names of students and be specific about the praise. "Good Job!" is not Good Enough.
  • Be in the POWER ZONE, preferably collecting data on mastery of students.
  • Use High Yield Strategies - Marzano's Nine. (High impact- Similarities & Differences)
  • Practice should be at the Application level or higher. Relate to the real world.
  • Use a kid friendly frame. Students should know what they are learning. The "I will" should not be the activity or paper.
  • Use Turn & Talk with seed questions. (Write seed questions during planning and have them posted.)
  • Critical writing is critical! (Use dry-erase boards, stickies, journals, blogs, etc...) It can be short. Create a process/system for ease of frequent implementation.
  • Make sure your schedule is posted in the classroom.
  • You will get a Vox and/or email after each visit. Then we will post campus stats together. (Usually, they will be posted in the Teacher's Lounge.)

Designing to the Edges (Tweet out your responses to this video clip. #austinblueroos)

The Myth of Average: Todd Rose at TEDxSonomaCounty

The teacher’s most important role is to be a designer of engaging experiences for students, supporting students in their work by incorporating more traditional roles as planner, presenter, instructor, and performer. ~The Visioning Document

Permission is Granted!

  • Experiment and try new things
  • Find ways to be innovative
  • Encourage risk-taking
  • Individualized Learning
  • Student Voice & Choice
  • Examples: Google Hang Outs, Passion Projects, Clubs, Project Based Learning, Blogs, Makerspace,etc... Continue to dream and create. Be the first! Challenge your students! Challenge yourself!
  • What are we doing different that sets us apart from the other schools? What are we doing that is different than the way school use to be?

Parent Involvement

Find ways to involve parents. Guest readers, Google Hangouts, parent participation in an activity, etc.... Be creative and find ways to include the parents through out the year. It doesn't have to be all at the same time. It could be a parent a week for only 30 minutes. (Just have them sign in through the office.) We want to WELCOME our parents to Austin.

Teaching to Mastery

Sal Khan: Let's teach for mastery -- not test scores

Messages for Certified Staff:

  • Professional Learning Goal meetings should have been scheduled with you on Outlook by Kelsey or Jenny. If you did not receive an invite, then see Kelsey or Jenny.
  • By grade levels, set up a day in October to have 1/2 day collaboration. Please don't double book subs. (Two at the same time for the same person.)

Other Important Information for ALL!

  • Please be patient. The PA system is only working one way. The office staff can call the classrooms, but are unable to hear your responses.
  • Last call for PALs! Please get names to Lee Ann.
  • PLEASE come to CiCI's to eat and greet students and families.
  • 2 PLC meetings are being cancelled, so you can attend the Parker County Edcamp on Oct. 1st. It's from 8:30 am-12:30 pm and will have AWESOME door prizes!

I have completed my on-line receipt of the the Employee Handbook. Have you?
