Stonybrook Middle School April 2018

Message from Mr. Day

Hello Stonybrook Middle School Families!

It is hard to believe that spring break is behind us already and that we only have 40 days of school remaining in this school year! We hope you find this new newsletter format enjoyable and more user-friendly as we continue to enhance our communication with our families.

As always, you will find a lot of information about what is going on at SMS and what is coming up. We are always looking for ways to better serve our students and parents, so please feel free to share any feedback with us.

As we look forward to the remaining weeks of the school year, there is still a lot for us to accomplish. We have been announcing to students the importance of finishing the year strong. The week of April 16th students get to demonstrate all that they have learned this year as we take ISTEP+ Part 2. In mid-May we have our final NWEA assessment as well as our standard classroom assessments. These data points all provide a level of insight from different perspectives as to how students are performing and in turn inform our instruction both as we close out this year and prepare for next.

We continue to have a significant need for supports of our students - both academically and in the social emotional domains. In the third quarter, we had thousands of missing assignments. Lack of assignment completion makes it challenging for teachers to inform their instruction as effectively as we do not know what a given student knows. We must find ways to hold students accountable to these academic expectations.

Please join us on Thursday, April 12th at 6 PM in our LGI as we discuss some of the topics that are challenging our students to perform. Some of the topics include the impact social media and screen time have on us as well as the importance of quality sleep and nutrition. As an incentive, any student who attends with an adult in his/her life will be entered to win a free trip to the May 24th baseball outing. At least 25 students can win!

Here is to a strong Red Storm Scholar finish! Go Red Storm!

Mr. Nathan Day

2018-19 Course Requests

At this point in the school year, scheduling requests have been collected. Current 8th grade students’ schedules for 9th grade, were completed February 9th. All scheduling papers have been submitted to Warren Central.

Current 7th grade students’ schedule requests were due March 16th. If students did not turn in a request, it is important for them to do so. Any current 7th grader who does not turn in a course request paper, will be scheduled without student input.

Students may not arbitrarily change course selections next fall after school begins.

Looking for a Job? Need a Work Permit?

Before Stonybrook Middle School can issue a work permit to a student, the student must first find a job. Once a student has been told by an employer that they would like to hire the student, please bring the INTENTION TO EMPLOY or Intent to Employ card to Stonybrook. We cannot issue a work permit without the Intention to Employ form.

If you have any question about the topics above - please contact Mrs. Nicholson 317-532-8800 x8811

Important Information Regarding the Boys & Girls Club Program at Stonybrook

Dear Club Families,

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis is proud to have provided after school programs in several Warren Township schools for more than 10 years. We are sad to share that on May 18th, the Boys & Girls Club will celebrate it's last day of serving young people at Stonybrook Intermediate & Middle School. In 2016, we opened our newest Boys & Girls Club facility, the Finish Line Club, located at 3870 N. Post Road, to expand our services to more families in this community. We welcome you to check out the Finish Line Club and hope you will join us there for our summer and after school programs.

We thank you for the opportunity to work with you and your children this school year. We invite you to join us for a closing celebration in May. The date, time, and details of this celebration will be determined and shared with you soon.
