Art is Everywhere
Rockdale High School Visual Art Program
Welcome to the 2014-15 School Year!
I am Mrs. Urban, the visual art teacher at Rockdale H.S.
All students must complete one year of fine arts. Presently, the fine arts offerings include band and art. The full year credit must be taken in the same course.
Visual art courses include the following:
Grade Placement: 9-12
Art I is a two-semester class designed to introduce students to the elements of art including line, shape, form, color, value, and texture. In addition to the exercises intended to teach specific skills and principles, projects will be planned to utilize application of these skills and principles so that they can be applied in daily living. Art history and art appreciation will be integrated into the curriculum when it applies to the specific principles and skills being taught. Sketchbook/journals will be kept in order to work through ideas, practice drawing & design skills and to record the artistic journey. Through studio practice, application of design concepts and informed decision making, students will assemble a body of artwork that demonstrates a high level of quality and growth over time of content, technique, and process.
Art 2: Drawing and Sculpture
Grade Placement: 10-12 PREREQUISITE: Art 1
Drawing & Sculpture is a two-semester class designed to introduce students to drawing and sculpture. In addition to the exercises intended to teach specific skills and principles, projects are planned to utilize application of these skills. Art history and art appreciation will be integrated into the curriculum when it applies to the specific techniques and skills being taught. It will be expected that students will use
sketchbooks to record their own ideas in their investigation and progress in making art. Students will rely on their perceptions of the environment, developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks.
Art 3: Painting and Printmaking
Grade Placement: 11-12 PREREQUISITE: Art 2
This third-year/two-semester course provides students who have successfully completed an Art 2 course, an opportunity to further develop their artistic skills through the use of advanced concepts and processes of painting and printmaking. Emphasis will be placed on the study of specific art styles or historical periods, analysis of an art career and creating their own portfolio.
I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. Georgia O'Keeffe
Are there TEKS for Fine Arts?
Yes. The Fine Arts TEKS can be accessed in 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 117. The TEKS describe what every student should know and be able to do at each grade level and organize Fine Arts education into four strands of learning – Perception, Creative Expression/Performance, Historical/Cultural Heritage, and Response/Evaluation. The Fine Arts TEKS are required when providing instruction in Art, Dance, Music, and Theatre.
