October 2017 Issue
A Note From Our Principal
Dear CE Families,
We had a smooth start this year and are already creating memories of the BEST YEAR YET. This past month, we launched our new district mobile application; a new STEM Program for students in grades 2-4 and our youngest learners have made a smooth transition into their new classrooms. When you visited last month, you may have noticed that the classroom you saw has changed dramatically since your elementary experience. The signs of student-centered instruction show that at CA we are inspiring students to meet extraordinary success. Students are collaborating on math problems, recommending books, making connections to science and their environment and critiquing writing pieces to help strengthen the skills of every learner while technology is deeply embedded in our school culture. It is an exciting time to be a student. Yet, it is also an exciting time to be a parent. As adults, our learning should never stop. Instill in your child the benefits of being a lifelong learner. I'm pretty confident that you have already learned something new from your child and hang in there if it's confusing. As Frederick Douglass stated, "If there is no struggle, there is no progress."
Events this month include:
- October is National Bullying Prevention Month
- Oct. 9th: NO SCHOOL - Columbus Day Observance

Annual Halloween Parade
Our K-4 students will be participating in our Annual Halloween Parade on Tuesday, October 31st, beginning at 2:40 p.m.
Students should bring their costumes in a separate bag. For example: Capes, long pants and/or dresses should be placed in a bag and brought to school. In addition, other props should be brought in a bag. Please do not send students to school with plastic weapons such as guns, knives and other objects. Absolutely no masks should be worn to school by children. Teachers will assist the children in dressing up.* (*ONLY PARENTS, CONFIRMED BY A TEACHER TO ASSIST WITH STUDENTS, WILL BE ALLOWED INTO THE BUILDING.)
Our parade route has changed this year. (See the below picture to get a good visual). The children will be exiting the school by the back door located between the Elementary School and Middle School. The parade will proceed down the path, circle around the back of the Elementary School and down the sidewalk by the District Office. Children will then re-enter the building through the Elementary School front doors. The best location to view the parade would be near the playground area. For safety concerns, we are asking that adults DO NOT wear anything that would obscure their faces.
Following the parade, the children will return to their classrooms and costumes will be removed before the children leave. If you plan on taking your child after the parade activities (rather than taking the bus), PLEASE SEND A NOTE IN WITH YOUR CHILD THE MORNING OF THE PARADE. ALL STUDENTS WITH A NOTE WILL BE DISMISSED AT THE WALKER DOOR.
*SPECIAL REMINDER* THE BUS LOOP AREA IS FOR STAFF AND BUSES ONLY! THE HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL BE DISMISSING DURING THIS TIME. FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL STUDENTS, PARENTS SHOULD PARK IN THE VISITOR LOT, ON SUNSET BLVD., OR BEHIND THE HIGH SCHOOL. PARKING AT THE CURB IN THE VISITOR LOT IS NOT PERMITTED.

Readers & Writers for Kindergartners
In September, our Kindergartners became readers and writers! They are reading words in our classrooms, throughout the school and even in their own homes! We are now reading to learn new things from nonfiction books. Our super writers are beginning to draw pictures of things they know really well, and beginning to add words to their pictures. Let’s celebrate these readers and writers!
