Mrs. Capshaw's Media Minute
Tips and info from the Library Media Center
Readers make readers...walking the walk.
"The reality is that you cannot inspire others to do what you are not inspired to do yourself" Donalyn Miller
I remember my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Swanson, reading "Ramona the Pest" to us a chapter at at time in class. That is where I learned to love reading. To this day, I read all the time and share that love of reading with my students. I challenge you to become a reading role model to your students. Share you reading habits, loves, dislikes, and struggles with your kids. Don't fake it, be honest. I always say that everyone is a reader, they just haven't met the right book. I can help introduce you to the right one if you need help. Just ask!
I know you are going to say that you are too busy, you don't have time to read. The kids say the same thing to me. So, here are my tips and tricks for getting reading time into a busy life.
- While you wait - Seems like there is always something to wait for: the doctor or dentist, my daughter's ballet class, my son's baseball practice, while my hair color is setting at the salon, before a meeting starts, the DMV, and on and on. I always have a book in the car and on my phone for times when I don't expect to wait. I grab a book when I know a wait is inevitable. Maybe instead of checking your Facebook, you could put your face in a book. (yeah that was cheesy)
- During commercials - No one wants to watch commercials anyways. Take those 2 minutes to read a book. The minutes can add up quickly after a night of your favorite shows. Seriously, I do this ALL THE TIME!
- In the bathroom - what else are you going to do while you sit there?
- While you are cooking - just make sure to watch the food too, so you don't burn it.
- Before bed - its a great way to fall asleep if you aren't sleepy.
- Audio books - during the summer last year when I was packing up my house and on several long drives I started listening to audio books. I listened to the entire Alex Rider series last year (Kid Spy books). My own 3 kids and I have listened to all of the 39 clues books in the car over the last year. Even my 4 year old can't wait for the next one to be available for checkout. Perfect idea if you have a long commute to work.
