Sunrise Kindness Tree
Did you know that even witnessing an act of kindness can make someone feel more positive and encouraged to share kindness themselves?
This month, students and staff have been noticing kindness at Sunrise. When an act of kindness happens, they have been recording the student's name and what they did on a heart, which then is hung on our tree in grand central. The tree is surrounded by the donations of food for our local community!

February Word of the Month ~GENEROSITY
Students will be learning about this month's word: Generosity, and that there are many ways to show generosity!
Generosity Challenge
Day 1: Give the gift of time and attention. Turn off the TV, put away the video games, set the phone aside and spend time with someone. Give them your full attention.
Day 2: Give the gift of words. Call, text or write a note to someone and let them know how much you appreciate them.
Day 3: Give the gift of hospitality. Invite someone to your home to play a game, have a snack, or watch a movie together.
Day 4: Give the gift of service. Who could you help today?
Day 5: Give the gift of stuff. There is a lot of “stuff” we can give that doesn’t cost anything. For example you can clean out a closet or bake something for a neighbor or friend.Dancing Classrooms Performance
Our fifth graders will be showcasing their ballroom dancing skills in a performance on Thursday, February 15th at 9:30 am in the Sunrise gym. Families are invited to attend and see our 5th graders in action!

Student Handbook: Personal Property
Recently, we have seen an increase in the amount and kinds of toys and personal items that students are bringing to school. These items should be left at home, unless the student's teacher expressly permits them, such as for a special day or event happening in the classroom.
The elementary school handbook states:
To avoid lost, broken, and stolen items, keep all personal toys, cards, and playground equipment at home. If personal items are brought to school, items will stay in students’ backpacks.
February Higlight - 95 Percent Literacy Intervention System
The 95 Percent Literacy Intervention System is utilized by our Learning Assistance Reading Program. One component of the system is a diagnostic assessment. Diagnostic assessments are a type of evaluation used to identify a student's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills in a specific subject or academic area (in this case, reading).
All students were screened at the beginning of the school year with an oral reading fluency assessment (a timed reading to gather information on rate, porosity, and errors). Students who scored below the 25th percentile on this were then screened using the 95 Percent diagnostic assessment to determine skill needs.
Students who showed specific phonics and/or phonemic awareness skill needs were then identified to take part in small groups that work on instruction of these specific skills. This instruction happens during a time of day when there is no new content being covered in the classroom, and when students will not miss out on other key learning. In fact, in most cases this takes place during “What I Need” time, a time when all students in a grade level receive review, intervention, or extension lessons around a skill or goal.
Identifying and closing skill gaps early is essential and provides a strong foundation for reading success. With the 95 Percent Literacy Intervention System as a part of our curricular resources, the Learning Assistance Program can diagnose phonemic awareness and phonics skill deficits, and effectively deliver precise intervention instruction.
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
