Setting the Stage for Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences

This week will be our first official time to meet with your child's teacher during our fall Parent-Teacher conferences. MAP score reports were sent home late last week to all 2nd-5th graders so that parents can have a chance to review the information and generate any questions. One of our hopes at Avoca West is to build each learner from an an academic standpoint as well as from a social emotional standpoint. You'll likely hear (and can ask about!) progress in math, reading, and writing, but should also consider asking questions about how your child is seen in cooperative situations, his/her comfort in being a leader, and perhaps even friendships your child's teacher sees in and outside of the classroom. Our staff looks to build the "whole child" at Avoca West and we hope to leave you with a "whole picture" of your child as well!

Please know that a strong home-school relationship is critical to your child's success, so feel free to reach out to your child's teacher at any time.

Coaching at Avoca West

Research shows that the most impactful method of professional development is one that is embedded into a teacher's daily routines and habits. Rather than send teachers out to "one-and-done" professional development sessions, we are making strategic use of those experts already working in the district. How's that?

Katie Morgan, Diane Bilcer, and Kelli Lane are working closely with teacher in a variety of settings to help build their knowledge of how to best support advanced learners in Math, English Language Arts, and Technology Integration. This support can take the form of team meetings, one-on-one coaching sessions, co-teaching in the classroom, modeling lessons, or working with small groups or individuals and sharing successes and ideas for transfer. By integrating the support in this way, our instructional coaches are able to provide teachers with the ideas they need to best support all of our learners based on their needs.

Here's to progress and continuous improvement!
