Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby families,
I hope everyone is staying safe and taking care of each other during this difficult time. Incredibly, we continue with At Home Learning and are now just three weeks away from the last day of school! We are planning a 5th grade Virtual Zoom Promotion Ceremony on June 3rd at 5:00pm and we need your help with photographs for a slideshow. Any family or friend of a current 5th grade student, please email me some photos of current 5th grade students throughout their years at Adelante or Selby or Adelante Selby this year to help us put together the video. We also need the photos for the Yearbook for a special 5th grade section. The yearbook will not be available until August when we return to school on the 19th, but as it's been such a memorable year (to say the least) I would expect everyone will want to buy one! Teaching and learning continue at home following these district guidelines on page 4 of the document. I want to thank Unidos PTO for the compilation of online resources for your convenience in English: here and Español : aquí Here are some fun and easy Art projects from YouTube to try out:
Ice Cream Tower , DogMan , Flamemallow , and Funny Toilet Paper Roll

- For your own and our protection, please wear a mask and gloves and do not leave the car during drive through. We thank you for your patience!
Acknowledge Alliance partners with our school by placing trained mental health professionals who provide a variety of services to students and teachers with a focus on strengthening resilience. We've been fortunate to have Ursula Jorgensen as our Resiliency Consultant this year and she has worked with all teachers and staff, and students in 5th, 4th, and 3rd grades on Social Emotional Learning through Project Resilience(see the attached letter explaining Acknowledge Alliance/Project Resilience). Unfortunately, the 3rd grade Social Emotional/Project Resiliency lessons were cut short when we had to close schools due to COVID-19. Ursula has agreed to share the At Home Videos for 3rd graders with the entire school community due to the unprecedented situation all of us are currently facing. She asked me to emphasize three things as context for the videos:
1. The video and content were adapted with 3rd grade in mind.
3. This is the first of four lessons that have been adapted from 40 minute in person lessons to sharable 10 minute online video with follow up reflection questions and expressive activity.
Online Lesson 1 - This one will review the concepts of identifying feelings. It has a mindfulness, story read aloud, reflective 3 questions, and art activity all in one!
Online Lesson 2 - Review of Coping with Feelings (video out next week)
Online Lesson 3 - New Problem Solving & Decision Making (video out in 2 weeks)
Online Lesson 4 - Celebration of completing SEL for 3rd grade (just for 3rd graders)
As many of you know, Rafael Avedano is the Director of Siena Youth Center which is an after school program that works with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. His staff has continued to support and tutor students remotely. Additionally, I also want to acknowledge and thank him and his staff for their tireless work helping our neediest families in the community. He reports that in April they served 1379 families which is over 6000 individual people as families range in size from 3-8. To give everyone a look at how much the need for assistance programs has grown for food, clothing, rental assistance, and counseling during the COVID-19 pandemic, let me share out the numbers of families served per month Rafael reported for the past few months:
- January-250
- February-270
- March-779
- April-1379
Rafael asked me to share the giving website if you would like to donate to a great cause:

You may be aware that the Redwood City School District Board of Trustees rejected the recommendation to permanently name our school as Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School. The School Board’s official 0-5 vote took place at the last public meeting on Wednesday, April 22nd. The Board members have requested for the School Naming Committee to submit new suggestions to Superintendent Baker without the mention of Adelante or Selby Lane. As a result of the Board's decision, the School Naming Committee reconvened to come up with new suggestions for the permanent name of our school before the end of this school year. We looked through the list of other names that were suggested via community input earlier this year and create a list of 7 names to vote for your top three choices. In addition, we added a write-in section for you to suggest any other name that you would like the committee to consider. The ballot /voto should be completed by tomorrow, Friday, May 15th by 2:00pm. I sincerely hope that everyone takes the opportunity to complete the new Naming Ballot so we can get your valuable input on this important decision. I understand that this naming process brings up hard feelings around the schools closure decision from last year and it has been difficult for everyone(myself included), but we need to stay positive. After all, we are united in our vision and philosophy around Dual Language Immersion and a tremendous amount of community building and progress has happened this year. I thank you for remaining engaged and participating in this process! A reminder that Board Policy dictates that the committee recommend three names to Dr. Baker who makes the final selection to present to the Board for approval. The next Board meeting is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, May 20th at 7:00pm. We have until the end of June for the School Board to vote on our school’s final new name.
The Unidos PTO needs your help to establish a PTO board for next school year, 2020-21. If you are interested in taking a more active role at our school, this is a great way to contribute your time and work with a wonderful group of people towards the Unidos mission: to support the education and welfare of all Adelante Selby students. Please take a moment to look at the attached table with descriptions of positions on the Unidos board. If you are interested, please contact unidosyadelante@gmail.com. We are happy to answer any questions you may have, as well. The final Unidos meeting of the year will be Tuesday, June 2 at 6pm, via Zoom, and Board members for the 2020-21 school year will be voted on at this meeting. Finally, please remember that as a PTO, everyone in our community is a member of Unidos and can attend board meetings throughout the year. Being on the Board of Unidos gives you the right to vote at Board meetings along with carrying out the duties of your position.
Redwood City School District (RCSD) seeks the input of the community as the school district studies its attendance zone to shift the current attendance boundary areas of neighborhood schools. The district’s school boundary change study comes after the moves and mergers of programs and consolidation of schools. A demographer’s presentation to the Board of Trustees will take place on May 20. Click here ( and aquí en Español )to learn more about how you can provide your input. The final Board approval will take effect for the 2021-22 school year registration.
