Carol Rae Ranch Elementary
March 2020
Principal's Corner
Hello Carol Rae Families:
Thank you to everyone for your support of the school-wide PTSO Color Run. As of this publication, we raised just over $11,000 which will be used to pay for the t-shirts and to get items for the playground and school. If you still have a donations or pledges please send them in ASAP.
The month of March holds many fun events including 6th grade science camp, K-6 Field Day, several field trips, and Family Activity Night. Friday, March 6th is a half-day. We will have donut morning, rodeo day for first graders (yee-haw!) and pajama day on that day, too. Students and staff will have a school-wide reading event just before we send everyone off to start Spring Break. Be on the lookout for our new marquee- it will be awesome!
Students continue to be busy with academics, activities, and are showing excellent growth! Next month is State testing and we always appreciate the support and work that you do to help your student(s) be safe, respectful and responsible. Our Coyote families make our school a great place for everyone to learn, every day!
Should you have any ideas or a concern to share, please contact me. I am here to help and would love to hear from you.
Thank you all for another great month,
Thea Hansen

From the Nurse: Head Lice-Take a Peek Once A Week
By Elizabeth Compiseno, RN
We often see an increase in head lice after school breaks, so this is a good time to send a reminder regarding head lice as we head into spring break.
What Are Lice?
We’ve all heard of lice, but do you know what they REALLY are? Lice are small, wingless, grayish-tan parasitic insects that live and breed in the human hair. They feed off of blood in the scalp. Nits are the lice eggs. They are tiny, oval-shaped eggs, about the size of a knot in thread that are attached firmly to the hair shaft by the female, generally within ½” of the scalp. Research has shown that lice do not pose a medical or public health hazard. They do, however, cause significant itching and secondary infections are possible as a result of germs getting into open wounds on the scalp caused from scratching. Head lice can survive for approximately 1 to 2 days without a human host and cannot live on family pets.
How Are Lice Spread?
Lice crawl, and quickly. They do not jump or fly. While lice are typically spread from head to head contact, they can also be spread by sharing brushes and combs, towels, bedding, etc. Sleepovers are a common place that lice are acquired. Lice ARE NOT a sign of bad hygiene and can be contracted by anyone regardless of their cleanliness. Encourage your children not to share brushes, hair items, pillows, blankets, etc., with other children, and encourage them to avoid head-to-head contact.
My Child Has Lice, What Do I Do?
If your child has lice, please notify the Health Office and treat them before they return to school. There are several options available, including over the counter products such as Rid or Nix, and prescription medications available from your doctor. One of the most important steps in lice removal is the removal of nits. Not all nits are always killed during the treatment process, and manual removal is important to prevent a re-infestation. Make sure to check all family members for lice and treat appropriately as well.
Treating the child’s head is just one part. Cleaning of the environment is also a necessary step. Wash all bedding that the child has slept in using hot water and drying on high heat. Any clothes they have worn over the last 3 days should also be washed in hot water and dried. Heat kills lice. Make sure to vacuum all couches, rugs, car seats, etc. that may have touched the child’s hair to prevent re-infestation. Any personal items that cannot be laundered such as stuffed animals should be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks. All combs, hair brushes, hair clips, etc., should be soaked in hot water for 5-10 minutes as the treatment product recommends. These steps should all be taken on the same day as treatment of the head.
When Can My Child Return to School?
Your child may return to school once they have been treated and no live lice remain. Before returning to class, they must first see the School Nurse, with a parent in attendance, to be cleared. Lice should not be a cause of significant school absence, we want your children happy and learning here at school.
If you have questions or would like more information, contact the School Nurse.

School administrators will make the final decision regarding the appropriateness of any student's appearance.
To create the safest possible environment for students and to guarantee that the students' focus is to receive a quality education, GPS finds it necessary to outline expectations regarding student dress code. Questions regarding clothing/appearance issues should be directed to the school administrator.
