Talent Show - A letter from Ms. Oftedahl...

Hello Lincoln Families!

I am attempting to do a virtual talent show for LES this year. Let’s use this unique time to be creative with your acts. The virtual component allows the students to share talents they would not normally be able to share on the stage. For example – golfing, drawing, skateboarding etc. Think outside the box.

If your child is interested in showing their talents, you can click HERE (or on the picture) to sign up your child.

In order to participate, your child must be signed up by Friday, January 29th, and the videos are due by Friday, February 12th.

Please do not hesitate to contact me via email anytime: Karen.oftedahl@pwssd.k12.wi.us

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s talents!!

Sincerely,

Ms. Oftedahl

Elementary Movement to Phase 4 of our PWSSD Instructional Plan for 2020-2021

This past Monday, January 11, 2021, our School Board unanimously approved the plan for us to transition to Phase 4, resuming in-person school five days a week. This plan will begin on Monday, January 25, the start of second semester.

Even though the Phase 4 plan provides a full-time, in-person opportunity at all levels, the elementary plan is slightly different from the plans at Port Washington High School and Thomas Jefferson Middle School. The high school and middle school were initially in Phase 2 of the PWSSD Reentry Plan. This Phase was often referred to as the Hybrid or Cohort Model. The elementary schools started the year in Phase 3 of the plan, which allowed us to be in-person four days a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays with a virtual Wednesday. On virtual Wednesdays, our staff collaborated across the District to provide videos to support instruction and help students and families who were unable to attend school in-person. A Hybrid or Cohort Model has not been implemented at the elementary level this school year. With the movement to Phase 4, there are some important changes to acknowledge.

In Phase 4:

  • Students will attend school in-person everyday Monday through Friday and follow the school calendar. Wednesdays will no longer be virtual after January 25.

  • Students who are temporarily unable to attend school in-person will need to participate synchronously in their classroom through their classroom’s virtual link. This means that your child will be expected to attend school with his/her peers through the use of technology and follow their classroom’s daily schedule in real time.

  • Your child will also need to complete and turn in his/her assignments on the same timeline as their peers unless another arrangement has been established with his/her teacher.

  • We will no longer be able to provide recorded instructional videos or separate assignments and activities for students who are unable to be in the classroom in-person.

  • Teachers may still choose to use SeeSaw and Google Classroom as instructional tools.

  • Your individual child’s teacher will communicate his/her learning expectations, schedule, and materials needed for students to participate in their class.

  • Depending on the length of your child’s quarantine/absence, parents, teachers, and the school office will work together to have materials picked up (and dropped off for teacher review) throughout the quarantine/absence period.

*Full-time, virtual programming will remain available for those who have opted in for second semester. If your situation changes, or considerations need to be made for your child’s in-person schedule, please contact our office.

As we transition to Phase 4 of our PWSSD Reentry Plan, we ask for your patience and understanding. There may be situations that arise we will need to problem-solve along the way. Together, I know we can find solutions that will allow us to continue to provide high-quality, in-person instruction while also supporting quarantined/absent students through synchronous learning.

Virtual Inclement Weather Days

Now that we are well into our winter months, we need to be prepared for possible inclement weather days. Fortunately, we have established virtual schedules for all of our classes that will allow us to conduct school remotely on days when the weather is severe enough to cancel in-person school. This ability to quickly move into a virtual learning model will help us provide more instruction for our students and meet our required instructional minutes without needing to make up days.

Snow days are often hard to predict, and our staff will do the best they can to send home devices and materials if there is a possibility of large amounts of snow that may hamper our ability to have school the following day. It is far more likely to close school due to severe cold, such as the Polar Vortex we experienced in the past. If a Cold Weather Advisory is in the forecast, we will likely have school. However, if there is a Cold Weather Warning, we will most likely not have school unless the forecast is downgraded to something less severe.

If and when school is canceled due to inclement weather, our classes will follow their virtual schedules that were used last week, January 4-8. Prior to the holiday break, your child’s teacher worked with him/her to establish expectations and routines for this time. Please know that during an inclement weather day some adjustments may be made with these schedules to best meet the needs of our students and families. As always, we will do everything we can to make this experience a positive one for your child.

Wanted: Pop tabs!

Lincoln students, families, and staff have been collecting pop tabs for the past five years to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Milwaukee. This wonderful organization provides a home away from home for families with a child who is staying at Children’s Hospital. The RMHC offers many wonderful amenities for families, to help them maintain as much normalcy and solace as possible. These include a game room, computer room, study room, Secret Garden, laundry room, fitness center, playground, art and music therapy, church, and free meals. Pop tab donations are one of RMHC’s funding sources and in May of every year, they hold a special “Pop Tab Day,” when the value of pop tabs is generally tripled! That’s right, rather than earning 33¢ per pound, each pound of pop tabs collected on this day is worth around $1.00! We have an awesome start on our collection this year, but want to see it grow over these next few months. Just pop off the tabs from aluminum or tin cans and send them in with your Lincoln Lion at any time. Students can place them in the blue and yellow wooden bin in the hallway across from the office. As always, thank you for your support!

For Parents & Guardians

This week's article for parents, guardians, and caregivers comes from psychologytoday.com and it's called:

"Parenting in the Era of Addictive Electronics"

Please be sure to pack a change of clothes & mask in your child’s backpack

An extra mask, shirt, pair of sweatpants, and pair of socks are very helpful in case of run-ins

with puddles at recess or milk spills at lunch. We have a very limited supply

of items to loan, and when we run out, we will need to phone a parent to get dry

clothing.

COVID-19 Illness Tracking Tool

Cold Weather Reminders

Please be sure your child comes to school each day prepared for the weather. Winter coats, hats, and gloves are very important for keeping kids comfortable during recess. Students who choose to play on the snow hills, woodchips, or in the field at recess will be required to have snow pants and boots. Those students without boots and snow pants will be limited to playing on the blacktop only. Recess will be outdoors unless the temperature and/or wind chill drops below 0°.

Lunchroom Supervisors Needed

We are looking for Lunchroom Supervisors from approximately 10:45am – 1:45pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. You would be working with a specific grade level by assisting the students in the lunchroom, as well as supervise them outside on the playground during lunch recess.

This is a paid position! If you love working with children this is the job for you! Please click on the "Application for Lunchroom Supervisor" below. Fill out the application and you can bring it to the office, or send it to jane.gennerman@pwssd.k12.wi.us.
