The Program will award a non-renewable $1,000 scholarship to one graduating Crosby Scholar senior who completed a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service during high school and who demonstrates in a clearly-written essay the sacrifices necessary to perform so many hours of service alongside the many demands of academics, extracurricular activities, part-time employment, and/or other commitments. The essay should also address what motivated the applicant to maintain such an extensive commitment to volunteering.

The Mona W. Lovett Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award provides a non-renewable scholarship to a graduating Crosby Scholar senior who created, organized or recruited others for a specific volunteer activity. Applicant must plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university.

The Mona W. Lovett Community Outstanding Commitment to Service Award provides a non-renewable scholarship to a graduating Crosby Scholar senior that despite balancing all of the demands of the senior year, has remained committed to a heavy schedule of volunteer service. Applicant must plan to enroll in a two- or four-year college or university.

AAMPED (African American Males Pursuing Educational Dreams) Scholarship
The Program will award one non-renewable $1,000 scholarship to one graduating Crosby Scholar senior who has participated in an AAMPED activity; who will enroll in a two- or four-year college or university; has a cumulative weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher; who has successfully completed all requirements of the Crosby Scholars Program from grade 9 through graduation; and has performed a minimum of 10 community service hours during their senior year. The student will clearly demonstrate in an essay how they will apply the principles of servant leadership to their college experience and beyond.
Eligibility
Applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be an applicant or full-time student who is a high school graduate or has completed the General Education Development (GED) program, enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program.
- Be a U.S. citizen and a resident of North Carolina eligible for in-state tuition.
- Exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, "People Helping People," and demonstrate leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement.
- Demonstrate scholastic achievement and maintain a 2.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale or attain a score of 3,000 on the GED test.
- Use the scholarship to pay tuition, books, fees, course supplies, and transportation.
- Agree to continue at the community college where enrolled at the time of the scholarship for the duration of the scholarship, for four consecutive semesters or until completing a diploma program.
- Not be a director, employee or family member of an employee of the State Employees' Credit Union or the SECU Foundation.
The decision of the Scholarship Selection Committee will be final. Preference may be given to students with limited financial aid from other programs.
Amount
Each "People Helping People" Scholarship for community college students is valued at $5,000 ($1,250 per semester for up to 4 consecutive semesters of study at a qualifying campus).
Application Procedure
Recipients of the scholarships will be selected by their community colleges. Application details and other information will be available through the state's community college financial aid offices by the end of July. Inquire directly at your Community College's Financial Aid Office for details on how to apply.
