CHS Family Update
6/10/19
This is the last bulletin for the year...
When the New Year comes around and we see Ryan Seacrest on TV talking about the ball dropping and counting down to a new year, I never feel that it is my new year. I'm an educator. New Years is my half time show. July is my years end and August is my new year.
We have just about wrapped this year up. With one and a half weeks to go, I am calling it quits on the Family Update and Staff Bulletin for the year. The next time you hear from me will be in the summer as we get prepped for the new school year. I know that it has been a long and perhaps tough school year. I know mine has been full and complete in more ways than I would voluntarily ask for. All the same, the experiences that we have had this year are helping us to become better people. I look forward to a fantastic finish and a long and refreshing summer break. Thank you for all of your support and understanding this year.
Rest up, be safe, and go catch your soul.
In The Know
Teacher Gifts - We know you love our teachers. We do, too! Keep in mind that as public employees teachers cannot accept monetary gifts, including gift cards. Please share your end-of-year gifts with your teachers before the end of the school day on June 18. We cannot guarantee that your teachers will receive your gifts if you drop them off after the last day of school. Teachers leave for the summer and some of them clean out their mailbox early, making it hard for office staff to make sure they receive your thoughtful gifts.
Library News - Students must return all their textbooks and library books by the end of day on Tuesday, June 18th. Students will be charged a $30 late fine for each textbook and class set book that is not returned on or before the last school day. This is a new policy. It is crucial that we have all our textbooks available for students on the first day of school. If your student cannot find their book, they must pay the replacement cost by the end of this school year. To help students know what books they currently have out, we are delivering notices to students that summarize their library and textbook accounts. If you have any questions about your student's library and textbook accounts, contact Debbie or Tiffany in the library at 541-790-5139 or levy_d@4j.lane.edu.
Mark your calendars! The Churchill library will be open for summer book checkout on the following days:
Tuesday, June 25 from 10am-noon
Tuesday, July 9 from 10am-noon
Tuesday, July 23 from 10am-noon
Tuesday, August 13 from 10am-noon
Students are invited to stop by and pick up some fun summer reads. Students can sign up for text reminders about the library's summer hours by texting the message: @overdues to 81010.
Email and Cloud Storage Data - Once you graduate, your 4J email, 4J Google drive, and 4J Files1 are no longer accessible. Copy any data you wish to keep to an external drive or to your personal Google drive before you go.
For instructions on using Google Takeout to download your 4J Google data, visit 4j.lane.edu/technology/ns/googletakeout.
If you are using your 4J email for your Naviance account, you must change it to a personal email to avoid losing access to Naviance.Outgoing seniors, staff, or students who know they are moving out of the district should make sure to download their 4J data if they want to keep it. (For example portfolios, resumes, college applications, etc.)
Email:
- Seniors will lose their 4J email accounts at the beginning of September.
- Important emails can be forwarded to their personal accounts.
- In addition, make sure that all future mail goes to your personal email account, not the 4J one. This is especially true if they used their 4J account for college or scholarship applications.
You may also want to export your contact list. (Zimbra/Preferences/Export).
Files1 and Google Drive
- For Google drive, follow these instructions to download their data: http://www.4j.lane.edu/technology/ns/googletakeout/
- Anything on files1 can be copied to a thumb drive, uploaded to a personal Google Drive account, etc.
School Lunch Balances - The district carries negative balances for students who are not eligible for free or reduced meals (in "paid" status). We have CHS students that have negative balances which could otherwise be cleared up by applying for Free and Reduced priced meals. We encourage families to apply for free and reduced meals anytime after July 1 (see http://www.4j.lane.edu/nutrition/freelunch/). Menus and meal prices will be posted over the summer, and we look forward to beginning the transition to self-op!
Summer Education Opportunities - School is almost over and summer is here! I'm writing to you again to once more share information about Oak Hill School's summer programs. Our programs are for everyone including Talented and Gifted (TAG) students. Summer isn’t too far off and it’s time for families to start planning their summer camps.
We offer 4 unique summer programs:
Super Summer has challenging classes and activities for TAG/gifted student who have completed K-7th grades (2018-2019 school year).
Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a residential academic experience, for TAG/gifted students who have completed grades 6-11, located at the University of Oregon.
International Youth Enrichment Program (IYEP) is a residential academic experience specifically designed for international students who have completed grades 6-11, also located at the University of Oregon.
Summer on the Hill is a learning and recreational opportunities for all youth who have completed grades k-12
Super Summer and SEP have a rich 38-year history and a large following of students nation and worldwide. Students
must apply online for Super Summer and SEP. They can submit eligibility criteria in one of three ways.
● Proof of the student’s TAG/gifted identification
● Standardize Test Scores ( showing that the student scored in the 95% or above in at least one of the major
content areas)
● One recommendation form from a current educator in the student’s school.
● The student has attended Super Summer or the Summer Enrichment Program at Oak Hill School within the
past two years
Please share our program information with your students and families, many of whom would be a good fit at one or more
of our programs. I've attached the eligibility form and brochure for your reference.
If you would like more information please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to provide you with
additional resources and answer any questions you may have. More information about our programs can be found at

Kudos
Kevin Summerfield - Thank you for your coordination and facilitation of our annual Senior Stroll. This was a fantastic event and it helped spread a strong and positive message to our elementary school students. Thank you for helping to make dreams come true Kevin.
Also, thank you for finding a students family heirloom (ring). You genuinely made this persons day!
Jacob Steinberger and Chris Mudd - Thank you for such a full and exciting year of music. Your performance Tuesday night was a true synthesis of learning on display. Your students have been well trained and exude professionalism in every performance. Congratulations to the two of you on a job well done.
Misael Flores - Being in a new school is hard. Dealing with discipline on a daily basis is hard. You have embraced both of these challenges with a smile all year long. Your positive attitude and support has been a helpful influence this year. Thank you for seeing the glass as half full and putting others first.
