Bulldog Bulletin

New Britton Elementary - August 21, 2015

Principal's Message

Dear Bulldog Families,

We have had an amazing first full week of school! Our students seem to be adjusting well as the teachers and support staff ease them back into being active members of a classroom and school learning community. Please ask your student about what it means to be a FISHY friend and leader and how his/her thinking has been stretched this week.

Along with building a classroom and school sense of community, the beginning of the year is a time for teachers to get baseline data regarding what your student knows and can do in the areas of reading, writing, and math. The NWEA assessment is one measure that our HSE students in grades K-6 participate in to help us determine their achievement levels and to inform our instruction. Some classes tested this week, and others will test next week and into the first part of September. We will also conduct middle and end-of-year NWEA assessments. Be sure to look for more detailed information about NWEA in next week’s newsletter.

We are already feeling a new sense of family with our 2015-2016 classes. Thank you for sharing your children with us! As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.

Sincerely,

Lori Mankin

Counselor Cove

By Sherri Leiner, New Britton Counselor

Welcome back to NBE!!! COUNSELOR COVE is in the newsletter to update parents and staff of items of interest for NBE in the school counseling area. For those of you that are new to NBE, a little introduction of what I do here is needed. This is my 8th year at NBE and my 18th in the HSE district. I am here for all students, staff, and parents when it comes to questions and concerns about school. My job is to assist the staff at NBE to empower all students to be the best they can be academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally. I will be in the classrooms introducing myself and assisting students to solve small problems with Kelso’s choices. I will continue to come in the classrooms providing guidance education lessons to all the grades. I am also available to assist students that may be going through some type of personal concern, but I am not a clinical therapist and can not provide direct therapy. I can provide parents with a list of therapist if that is needed. The NBE website has valuable information concerning the guidance area and resources to assist parents. Please take a look at the link provided: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/NBE/academics/guidance.aspx

Child Find

What to do if you suspect a disability/Child Find:

If your child is age 2 ½ through 21, attends any school within the Hamilton Southeastern Schools boundaries or you live in our community, and you suspect your child may have a disability, you should contact us for more information.

· For children at least two and a half years of age, but not yet age-eligible for kindergarten, you should contact the Early Childhood Assessment Team at Brooks School Elementary School, 915-4250.

· For students who are eligible for kindergarten through age 21, you should contact your child’s teacher, school counselor or building administrator to discuss your concerns and explore the steps to be taken. If your child is not enrolled in public school, you should contact the counselor or building administrator in the building your child would attend if enrolled.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)

RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

Volunteering or visiting for lunch?

We are so appreciative of all of our volunteers who assist NBE teachers and staff! Most of our volunteers and visitors are aware of the procedures that need to be followed before volunteering or visiting NBE, but this is just a quick reminder that everyone must have a current background check on file and have viewed the Anti-Bullying webinar before volunteering or visiting NBE as a lunch guest. Background checks are considered current for three years. You can complete the background check and Anti-Bullying webinar by visiting the district's website at http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx.

A few reminders...

ATTENDANCE AND ILLNESS

It is important that your child is at school each day. Good attendance is one of the keys to achieving your child’s full potential in the learning process. A student with a temperature measuring 100 degrees or greater will be sent home from school. The student must remain fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. Students will not be sent to the YMCA After-School Program with a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or greater. If a student has vomited as a result of illness, he/she must stay home from school. He/she must be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school.

REPORTING ABSENCES

When your child is absent from school, please call the school office at 594-4130 (or email tbatman@hse.k12.in.us) before 9:00AM each day that he/she is absent. Please report the child’s name, classroom teacher, and illness. It is helpful for the school nurse to know the nature of illnesses in our school to identify symptoms of others seen in the clinic. A doctor’s permission to return to school may be required dependent upon the length and type of illness your child is experiencing. We ask you to do this to ensure the safety of your child and to confirm that he/she is either here or with you at home. Our voicemail system will take messages concerning absences before and after office hours. I f you do not contact the office, contact will be made with you by the school.

Birthdays are a special time, but as a safety precaution to all of our students, birthday treats are prohibited in the classroom. Also, pease be considerate of all students and teachers by refraining from passing out party invitations in class. Thank you!

New Staff Spotlight

Kristen Susott

"I taught 1st grade last year in Washington Township. I have a wonderful husband, mother, sister, and a sweet dog named Ginger! In my free time, I enjoy reading anything by Nicholas Sparks. I love the hands-on experiences my students receive when working with math, science, and technology."

The NBE staff would like to thank our PTO for a wonderful staff luncheon on our first teacher work day. We would also like to thank the volunteers who assisted us with arrival and dismissal on the first day of school. We appreciate all you do!
