Easley Weekly Update

Everything You Need to Know for the coming week.

June 4, 2023

a note from the principal

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

It's hard to believe the last week of school is upon us! Thank you to all of you for helping to make it such a successful year for our students. Please take a few minutes and complete the Back to School information in the Parent Portal. This is really important for securing transportation for your child next year in addition to providing us with updated information. Please also take a few minutes to look over the message from the PTA to see all that is planned for next year and ways you can get involved.

Here's to a awesome last week of school!

Fifth Grade Graduation

The fifth grade gradation is this Thursday, June 8th at 8:30 AM. Please be reminded that we have enough seating in the gym for each student to bring two guests. Tickets will go home with students on Wednesday. We will have overflow seating available in the cafeteria for additional family members who wish to attend but seating in the gym is limited to two family members.

Library Books and Summer Reading

Please be aware that all library books were due Tuesday May 30th. Please check with your child to see if they have returned their books, there are over 150 still out.

All students heard about summer reading opportunities. Please see the graphic below for more info. Students were also offered free books from Book Harvest and the DPS Curriculum and Instruction Department to use for reading over the summer.

SIT Meeting

Our next SIT meeting is Monday at 5:30 PM in the media center.

Back to School Reminder

If your plans have changed and your child will not be returning to Easley, please notify Leah Rubow as soon as possible at leah_rubow@dpsnc.net.

Please take a few minutes and complete the district BACK TO SCHOOL FORM. Your form will help us prepare for welcoming your child next year by:

  • Signing your child up for bus transportation (REQUIRED for service next year)
  • Updating your contact information so that we may reach you in an emergency
  • Providing you with updated information on district policies

Please visit this page and select the PowerSchool Parent Portal icon. From the Parent Portal:

1. Select the student you wish to register along the top

2. Select the Back to School update Icon on the left side for 2022-2023.

3. Agree to the terms and conditions

4. Select Begin Forms

FAQs

I can’t remember my login for the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you aren’t able to retrieve your login credentials using the “Having trouble signing in?” link email leah_rubow@dpsnc.net to have your account reset.

Do I have to answer all the questions?

No, but some questions are marked "Required" and must be answered before you can submit your form.

What if I make a mistake?

If you would like to make a change prior to submitting the form, you can either navigate back to the page using the “Prev” and “Next” buttons or if you are on the Review page select the underlined field. If you have already submitted the form you will need to contact your student’s school so they can make the changes for you.

I’ve completed the form, now what?

Once you have finished entering your information select “Submit.” This will send all of the information you’ve entered to the school. If you cannot select this button you will need to make sure that you have answered all required questions.

What if I have more than one student in the district? Do I need to do this for each child?

Yes, you will need to provide information that is specific to each child. We recommend that you complete and submit one form and then start another. This will allow you to “snap” (or share) selected family information, which saves you time.

Help! I’m having technical difficulties.

For technical support, visit our PowerSchool Community help center or click “Help” from any form page.

Thank you!

A Message From the PTA:

Next meeting:

Our next PTA meeting is Monday, June 5th at 6:30 pm in Easley’s media center. You can also join via Zoom using this link: the link will be on Bloomz and in the email version of this message.

PTA Dates and Information for Next School Year:

Our PTA parent survey results showed you want more volunteer opportunities, either at school or directly supporting our community. We also heard a desire to be better plugged in outside the monthly PTA meetings. With that feedback in mind, our PTA officer-elects have redesigned the PTA committees for the 2023-2024 school year to allow for more parents to join to support efforts.

Committee work will happen on a schedule set by that committee, and our hope is that larger committees will allow more people to divvy up work into more manageable portions (we get it, we are busy parents as well!). Committees may structure work into subcommittees.

A list of committee descriptions is below and on our website and signups are here. You may sign up for more than one committee.

If you are also interested in chairing a committee, or if you are interested in work beyond the scope of these committees, please email Erin Medlyn at erinmedlyn@gmail.com

We have also identified dates for meetings, community events, and some fundraisers for next year. You will find those also listed below as well.

We can’t wait to see the ways you will make our community even stronger!

Ryan Kelly, Vice President-Elect

Megan Kilb, Secretary-Elect

Erin Medlyn, President-Elect

Leigh Muller, Treasurer-Elect

Activities Committee

This committee plans and organizes our free-of-charge Easley community events, such as the fall festival and spring event. The group also organizes activities to beautify Easley, such as maintaining our discovery garden. Responsibilities include brainstorming and planning themes around events, organizing volunteers, researching vendors and planning event logistics. This committee will also collaborate with the PTA officers to sign contracts, stay within a budget and share information for community-wide communications. If you like throwing parties (or attending them) this could be a committee for you! Join here.

Fundraising Committee

This committee is tasked with coordinating our PTA fundraisers. Our largest fundraiser, Apex, requires very little work by volunteers. Because Apex raises the majority of money needed to support PTA efforts, we engage in very few other fundraising efforts. This committee will focus mainly on supporting the fall and spring book fairs with the media coordinator, in an effort that specifically benefits the school’s media center. This work mainly consists of volunteer coordination. The committee will also organize Easley Night Out throughout the year, in which restaurants donate a portion of proceeds to the PTA, for either take-out or dine-in meals. The committee will coordinate logistics with the restaurants and work with PTA officers to provide necessary paperwork or sign contracts. The committee will also work with PTA officers in providing information for community-wide communications. If you like organizing logistics, without planning themes or larger events, this could be a committee for you. Join here.

Community Support Committee

This committee is tasked with showing the love for our community. It supports teacher and staff appreciation efforts, not only during Teacher Appreciation Week in May, but throughout the academic year. This means organizing special treats for teachers and staff, like lunches on early release days. The committee also supports Crayons2Calculators, a non-profit effort which provides free school supplies to teachers. The committee will organize volunteers to “shop” teacher orders on designated days and deliver them to Easley. This committee also includes inclusion representatives who help ensure our PTA events and activities are accessible to our entire community—and may also serve on district-wide committees such as Parents of African American Children (PAAC). Finally, this committee also organizes room parents for each classroom, supporting the classroom teacher with individual classroom needs, as well as serving as the conduit for classroom communications of PTA information. If you are the person who finds joy in demonstrating how much you value others, this might be a committee for you. Join here.

Auditing Committee

This committee will review a report generated by the PTA Treasurer in the fall of each year to ensure fiscal soundness of the organization. The report is then submitted to the NC PTA to ensure we remain in good standing. The time commitment is minimal, and this committee only needs three members. If you are the “numbers” person, this could be the committee for you. Join here.

Nominating Committee

This committee is responsible for collecting and suggesting nominations for PTA officer positions in the spring of the academic year. The committee will solicit nominations and confirm with each person they desire to run. Then the committee will share biographical materials with PTA members for the officer elections, following the NC PTA bylaws. The time commitment is minimal, work activity is limited to the early spring, and this committee only needs three members. Ideally members of this committee are also serving on other committees so they are plugged into PTA work. If you are good at spotting skill sets in other people, this could be a committee for you. Join here.
