Back-to-School Open House
You are cordially invited to our Back-to-School open house on Thursday, September 15th, from 5:00-6:30. This is a drop-in event, and we hope our families can stagger arrival times because of our tight parking situation. Please pick up a ‘passport’ on your way into the school and visit at least 5 places to receive a treat. Our fabulous PTA is providing a free piece of pizza for each attendee. You will get to tour our beautiful school including your child’s classroom, Music and Art rooms and library. We will have some booths in the gym with important information for you regarding SPYA (youth sports), Right At School (before-and-after school onsite childcare, Learning Assistance Programs, Attendance, Health Information from our LPN, Mrs. Cruz, our program for Multilingual Learners and, of course, our PTA. Ms. Bobbi, our counselor, will have a booth, too. You will also be able to sign up for fall conferences. We hope to see you there
Dismissal
Please help us make parent pick-up as smooth and quick as possible:
Pull to curb near your sign (based on first letter of student’s last name).
If siblings have different last names, use youngest sibling’s last name to load together.
No loading in left lane. Please try to avoid blocking left lane.
Stay in your car unless helping student load on driver’s side.
Please be patient and courteous and let drivers out.
Thank you for helping keep our dismissal safe and efficient!
Have you heard about Right at School?
Franklin Pierce Schools has partnered with the YMCA of Pierce County to offer before and afterschool care for several years. Due to limited capacity, the YMCA is no longer able to offer childcare to support families at Collins Elementary. Right at Schools launched a new before and afterschool program at Collins Elementary. To learn more, visit www.rightatschool.com.
Right at School will have a booth at Back-to-School night!

Collins Dress Code
Collins Elementary is a community for learning and growth. We want our learning environment to be safe, comfortable, respectful and free from distractions. Students benefit from being dressed for movement, comfort, weather, and safety. Students will refrain from wearing anything profane, lewd, disrespectful or that could cause a disruption to school operation.
Headwear and Accessories
· Hats and caps are allowed outside. Students are expected to honor the adult’s policy for indoor hat removal.
· Face masks are optional for all. The rest of faces should be visible. For example, students are not allowed to wear hoodies zipped over their faces.
· Sunglasses may be worn outdoors.
· Accessories (jewelry, headbands, etc.) will be allowed only if they are not causing a distraction.
· High-value items should be left at home to prevent loss or damage.
Tops and Bottoms
· Tops should cover stomachs and chests. There is no sleeve requirement, provided coverage is sufficient.
· For short skirts or dresses, we ask students to wear shorts underneath (for sitting on the floor, fitness class or climbing on recess equipment).
· Undergarments and bottoms should be covered by clothing including when sitting on the floor (crisscross applesauce style).
Footwear
We want students to be able to play actively and participate in Fitness. Inappropriate footwear may inhibit a child’s ability to participate in some activities.
· Children should wear footwear that is safe for physical activity and weather.
· Flip flops and high heels are not recommended for fitness (PE) or playing on recess equipment.
· Waterproof boots or shoes are highly encouraged during wet weather. We go out to recess rain-or-shine, and most students are uncomfortable in wet shoes and socks. Feel free to leave an extra pair of socks in the backpack.
Outerwear
Students should be prepared to go outside for recess during all types of weather.
· Rain jackets or panchos and with hoods or hats are highly encouraged during wet weather.
· Please label outerwear with the student’s first and last name or teacher-code (ex. grade-initial, such as K-L for Kindergarten-Luebke); Students often take off outerwear at recess and forget it on the playground. When clothing is labeled, we can get it back to the owner.
If purchasing rainboots or rain jackets is a hardship to families, please let our counselor, Ms. Bobbi, or their teacher know and we will help.
Dress-code issues will be addressed by school staff. In the case of disrespectful or disruptive attire, students will be asked to change clothes or fix the problem and parents will be notified. Hats or accessories that pose a distraction may be held for parent pick-up. Parents, we thank you for your assistance in helping your children make wise choices about their school attire.
Sexual Health Education Opportunity for Grades 4 and 5 families
WA PREP for Healthy Youth knows that strong parent/caregiver engagement is a key component of young people’s health, safety, and well-being. This is true in every area of their lives, including Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSHE) implementation. WA PREP is recruiting parents/caregivers and young people to review eLearning micro-modules. All pilot participants will be paid for their time. These modules will focus on engaging, age-appropriate content and supports to guide conversations with young people around CSHE-related topics.
This work will take place virtually in mid-September. If you are interested in this opportunity or have questions about the process, please email WA PREP director Christine Hagstrom, at chagstrom@cardeaservices.org.
IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS
SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Collins is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:30 p.m. After 3:30 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!
EARLY PARENT PICK-UP If you need to pick your student up early, we ask that students be picked up no later than 3:45 due to our end of the day congestion. To preserve precious class time, we do not call students to the office until you have checked them out in person (remember your ID).
UPDATE CONTACT INFORMATION - If any of your information has changed (address, contact info., email address, etc.) please contact the office right away. This year more than ever, it will be important to have the most current information. Also, let us know what your preferred method of contact is - phone, email, text. You can reach the office at 253.298.3400.
