More Science Olympiad Success
Congratulations Merul Babaria and Anika Gupta for winning the 6th Place in the event of "Game On" at the 37th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament hosted by Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona on May 22nd. The duo is a part of the 15 member team that won the Oregon State Championship back in April and moved on to represent Oregon at the Nationals.
Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets consisting of 21 different events where top 60 teams from across the nation compete with each other for the top 6 spots for each individual event. The events cover a very wide and diverse range of topics like Crime Busters (Forensic Science), Disease Detectives, Fossils, Reach for the stars etc... For each topic Students are provided specific targeted areas where they are expected to master and gain in-depth knowledge.
For the event of Game On teams are required to develop a fully functional Video Game using the "Scratch" platform on a specific scientific theme that is disclosed only at the start of the trial.
The game developed is required to use at 4 different scientific concepts based on the given theme and include both user controlled and autonomous characters (AKA sprites) programmed with a complex range of movements and capable of interacting with each other and game background. The games are judged in 22 different areas covering over 150 attributes including everything from code style, code comments, type of music and sounds used, quality of graphics for the background and sprites etc...
