Miss Culver's First Grade News
January 8, 2016
Math: This week we began Topic 8: Tens and Ones. We have been practicing identifying groups of 10 ones as one ten in a "ten rod". We are also identifying and creating numbers using tens and ones.
Reader's Workshop: This week we continued our character unit. We talked about how characters learn lessons and how we can read character book fluently. We do this by making our voice, gestures and face express how the character is feeling.
Writer's Workshop: This week we began our new unit: Nonfiction Chapter Books. Students are going to begin writing chapter books about topics they are experts in. We discussed how information writing is different from the other types of writing we have done. We also began by identifying different subtopics within our topic (i.e. habitat and diet in a nonfiction animal book).
Social Studies: This week was all about maps! We talked about compasses and keys on maps. We worked on identifying where things are located on a map. We used our new map skills to create a map of Line Creek on the SMART Board!
