The Cyclone Watch
November 2020
Principal Updates
1. The second quarter of our school year will be here on November 5. As such, we must distribute materials to all students once again. Whether your child is assigned to fully online or to be in-person when we return, class materials will be available for pick-up on our distribution night. Our distribution night will be October 28, from 3:30-6:00p.m. We will be distributing materials for all students during this time. The distribution pick-up location will be on the north side of our building on Hickman Avenue. We ask that you please approach the pick-up location heading east for safety and convenience.
2. Teachers will be reaching out to you this week to begin scheduling Parent Teacher Conferences. Due to COVID considerations, we will be hosting conferences virtually. Each conference will be approximately 10-15 minutes in nature. They will be held between November 9-20. Be on the look out to schedule one for your child. We ask that you only schedule with one teacher this year. If you have special considerations, please contact me directly and we will be happy to set up a more formal meeting.
3. We are celebrating our JMS School Spirit Week this week. See the attachment for details..

News From The Media Center
We might not have students in the building, but we do have students in mind. Mrs. Kiley and Ms. Alex have worked on lots of things to make the media center work for you even if you are at home. The media center book info can be found on the JMS webpage. Under student links students can find info to help them find both physical books (Destiny) and ebooks (Sora) . CPS is also offering delivery services. If you need to have books delivered, we can make the arrangements to have this done.
iPad Help:
Tech help for iPads is still going on in CPS. We have Mr. Jake here in front of our building EVERY DAY from 12:30-2:30. Tech help is also from 5-7pm at the Aslin building Monday- Thursday. Students can also call the student help desk from 7:30-4 pm daily. The number is 573.214.3334.
If your iPad is not charging, please try other chargers as well as taking it out of the case. Please note that CPS supplies one cord and brick. If your cord and/or brick stops working, it is the expectation that families replace them.
Students should be using the Schoology App. Links for Zoom seem to work better when students use this app. Parents/students can also contact the JMS media center at 573.214.3210 X47470 if assistance is needed. We can get you help if we don't know the answers.
The JMS Media Center Schoology Course is a great place for students to find answers to tech issues. On our course we have info for book finding as well as getting books to your home. Mrs Kiley is also putting our Joke of the Day and our Daily Fun Fact. Please encourage your student to visit our course. We try to be fun- even from a distance.
Cyclone Book Club
Cyclone Book Club chose this as our first read this year. The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle by Leslie Connor is a "stick with you long after you have finished" book. Mason is a student who struggles in school with his dyslexia. He also has a sweating disorder. He sweats a lot. Mason lives with this grandma and uncle on the family orchard. A year ago Mason found his best friend dead on his family's property. Foul play is suspected. As if Mason's life doesn't have enough issues, he is also a victim to a bully. The innocence of youth along with the power of friendship pulls this book along to an amazing conclusion.
JMS Flu Shot Clinic
Your Jefferson Middle School student is invited to our flu shot clinic. The Boone County Health Department will be at our school on Tuesday November 17th, from noon until 2 PM. The teachers are aware that your student may miss class time when they attend the flu shot clinic. If we are back “in seat” the clinic will happen during the normal school day. IF your student has already received their flu shot before the school-based clinic occurs, please let the health room know.
Parents are encouraged to drop their student off at the media center door, off Hickman Avenue, on the north side of the school. Adults are asked to park in one of our parking lots and wait for their student in order to limit crowding inside the building.
Flu consent forms were completed electronically as part of your online registration process. These forms will be waiting for your Jefferson Middle School student when they arrive for the flu clinic if the guardian checked “yes” to give permission for administering the flu shot. The consent form is also available on the CPS website. Visit the health services page, click on “school-based influenza clinics”, and select the consent form in English or Spanish. If you complete the form on paper, please send it with your student when they come to the flu shot clinic. You may visit the local health department or your primary care provider to get a flu shot.
Prevention of the flu is very important during the pandemic. You are encouraged to bring your student to Jefferson Middle School for the flu shot clinic.
Please contact the health room if you have any questions about the flu shot clinic on Tuesday November 17th, Noon- 2 PM.
Thank you!
