Latvia has been under control by many countries before becoming it's own. It's been under control by Germans, Poles, Swedes, and Russians before finally becoming it's own country in 1918. Latvia is a very friendly and cheerful country that was not a founder of the European Union, but joined it in 2004.

Geography

5700°N, 2500°E It is 64,589 sq km and from that 2,340 sq km is water and 62,249 sq km is land. The size is slightly larger than West Virginia. They have 498 km of coast line. That's 309 miles! It's coast is the Baltic sea and it's one of the places you should vist!

Latvia is mostly low-lying plains with some hills in the east.

Latvia's flag is one of the oldest banners in the world and it represents a long history. A medieval chronicle even mentions a red standard with a white stripe being used by Latgallian tribes!
