Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Information On This Week's ELA Assessment and Upcoming Virtual Town Hall Meeting:
Just a few reminders for this coming week in the Intermediate School:
NYS ELA Assessment:
This Tuesday, April 20 we will be administering the NYS Assessment for grades 4-6. This year the there are some significant changes for ELA state assessment. New York State has reduced the length of the test significantly, using only the Day 1 multiple choice format for state accountability measures. The number of multiple choice questions is also being reduced as they remove the field test questions normally included on Day 1. The writing portion of the assessment (normally Day 2) will be provided to school districts to be used at their discretion and only for internal review.
Parents of Virtual Students:
The one-day ELA Assessment is a secure NYS test, which means it cannot be given anywhere but in school. Last week I sent message to parents of virtual students asking them to contact the school and let us know if their child will be coming into school this Tuesday (4/20) to take the ELA assessment. Parents of our virtual students who want their child to take the ELA and math assessments will need to let the school know so that we can make arrangements for their child to take the assessment in school with the rest of our students.
Superintendent Kise Announces Virtual Meeting on April 21 at 6:30 PM To Discuss Changes in Social Distancing Guidelines for NYS Schools:
As you may be aware from the news and/or social media, last Friday, NYS distributed an updated guidance document regarding social distancing in schools. It is now a possibility for schools to move from 6 feet to 3 feet but there are many stipulations that must be met before this can even be a possibility. I have scheduled a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, April 21st at 6:30 p.m. We will host this via Zoom (see link below to access the meeting). At this meeting, I will provide an update on this new guidance and what this presently means, and could mean for Sodus as the end of the school year approaches. After the meeting, I will send out a brief survey to gather input from all parents regarding your comfort level with making any changes to social distancing regulations here in Sodus.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Bucenec or me if you have questions or concerns for your child. You can contact Mrs. Bucenec, Intermediate School Counselor, through email at mbucenec@soduscsd.org, me through email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org. You can also reach me by phone at school at (315) 483-5206, or on my cell phone in the evening or weekend at (315) 576-7090.
Sincerely,
Gene Hoskins

SEL Tip: Social-Emotional Learning Tips From Sodus MTSS Coordinator Kristin DeFeo
SEL Tip #30 - A quick reminder as we focus on RELATIONSHIP SKILLS - “The abilities to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups. This includes the capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.” Here is a great visual/reminder for active listening skills.
