HOLY ROSARY NEWSLETTER
Term 1 Week 8 - 24 March 2017
MESSAGE FROM MARK:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
If you were at today’s fabulous assembly led by our Year 3 Catherine Gang, you would have seen a wonderful group of children who were completely at home entertaining us. To them and to their teacher Edel Waldron, congratulations and thank you – what a great start to the day!
Many children today were honoured with Merit Awards and Aussie of the Month Awards, and we are delighted for them and their families. Our Student Leaders are doing an excellent job of leading the assemblies. They have moved seamlessly in to that leadership space and are to be congratulated. Finally to the students who have taken over leading our National Anthem - you sound fantastic! Well done!
Plenty happens at assemblies, and many of our children are involved in some capacity. We welcome your attendance. We aim to start at 8.55 and finish at 9.30 so that those who have to head off to other commitments can do so.
Our second P&F meeting for the term is on Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in the Staff Room. The P&F Executive are really keen to welcome more people to the meetings, which are open to everyone. They last for around an hour, and are often followed with some hospitality. If you come along, relax - you won’t end up with a job to do!
Have a great weekend

PARRAMATTA GRASS EXTERMINATORS NEEDED – CAN YOU HELP?!
9am March 31 on the OVAL, followed by morning tea at 11! BYOT (Bring your own tool!)
Despite our best efforts to eradicate it, the Parramatta Grass on the oval is still a big issue. It is an invasive species which makes the ground surface uneven.
But, with your help, our grounds contractor Phil Kavenagh says we can overcome it! Phil thinks that a concerted effort from around 15 people will do the deed.
A posse of parents and guardians, each armed with the right tool to dig out the clumps, will overcome the threat!
If you can help, please ring or email the office. Thank you very much. See you on the oval on Friday 31 March, 9:00am.
LIBRARY NEWS
We learn in the library that books are treasures and we are very good at caring for them. Our school Library Bags are the best way to look after our treasured books and each child should have their own bag so that their books are safe getting to and from school and while being read at home. Did you know we have spare Library Bags in the library so that books can still be borrowed and taken home safely in a loan bag, if there are no overdues. Otherwise I will always hold a book until the next day. We have had a number of books come back this term with water and food damage and I have noticed that book bags are often not waterproof or tight closing. Library bags can be purchased from our Uniform Shop for $15 (email uniformshop@hrs.wa.edu.au.) and are the perfect size to fit in lots of wonderful books!

P & F NEWS
The Dads' and Kids' Camp Out held at the school over the weekend was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended (and some Mums who had the night off). Thanks to Br Stephen and the many Dads who helped out running the event, it would not have been such a success without those who volunteered their time. Also thanks to Farmer Jacks in Woodlands who generously supported the event.
The next P & F Meeting will take place on Tuesday 28 March at 7pm.

PARISH NEWS
Building Commencement to limit driveway access to church
The start of work on the new Parish Centre and adjoining Priory is imminent.
It will also come with disrupted access to the front and south side of the church.
The first two months of the year have been used to refine contractual, budgetary and cash flow arrangements for the project.
This week the formal contract with our builder, Badge, was signed and a building licence approved by the City of Stirling.
Work should get under way in the coming week. Until Holy Week, the driveway at the front of the church will be blocked off. Vehicles will need to be parked in the street.
During this period of about three weeks, a small cluster of replacement car bays will be constructed in the front of the church.
But with the building site fenced off, the southern driveway will be eliminated for the time being.
This means that when the front access resumes by Easter, only one entrance and exit will be available for walking and driving for the duration of the 30 week construction period.
Unfortunately, those who park in the front of the church will face some inconveniences as the turning radius will be tight for reversing.
A traffic management plan, being prepared for the safety of our parishioners, will be issued shortly. This will be updated regularly.

FAQ PAGE
With our new newsletter we have taken the opportunity to answer some of the questions we get in an open forum and we will add to that as queries come in.
What is the rationale for having the swimming carnival in November, rather than just after the trials?
We used to hold the carnival at Newman College. There were issues with the sun exposure, students wearing rashies as some parents wanted students to wear them, then take them off for a race and put them on at the other end. There were also issues with manual timing and judging. So we made the move to HBF stadium because it is indoors, has no sun issues and also has timing facilities which ensure results are as accurate as possible.
HBF stadium contacted us a few years ago and told us that we would no longer be able to have two bookings in Term 1 due to a large volume of high school and primary schools in Term 1 wanting the venue.
As a result , the carnival was moved to Term 4 to allow a swimming focus at different parts of the year. Although there is a gap, it allows the students that love to swim a chance to swim at trials in Term 1 the CPSSA Interschool Carnival in Term 2 and the Holy Rosary Carnival in Term 4. We appreciate that the trials and the Carnival in Term 1 is the ideal and we are in touch annually with HBF stadium to enquire as to whether there was a change of heart.
What is the detail behind the increase to school fees this year?
The general answer to this can be found in the 2017 AGM Report of the Board Chairperson Jonathon Woolfrey, which is HERE. The detailed answer can be found in the report of the Board Treasurer, Ross Tolley, which can be found HERE. Both reports make for excellent reading.
Can girls wear shorts?
Girl's sports uniform includes shorts, but if there is an appetite to wear the other summer uniform which includes grey shorts that is OK. Susanne, our Uniform Shop Co-ordinator has stock available.
