Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year
Principal's Corner
Week two, Eagles!
It was an exciting and encouraging first week here at Woodlawn Academy. The returning student arrived with new clothes, haircuts, shoes, and a few more inches of height. First-time kindergarten students joined the tradition we all experienced on our first day of school. There were tears, smiles, and a range of human emotions from students to staff.
The excitement came in the form of a fire alarm trip two hours into our first day. Students and teachers didn't panic. Students, some with books in their hands, behaved as they had been trained. They listened to their teachers and followed their instructions so well that they broke a campus record of one minute and 30 seconds. That 500 + students (and counting) could exit the building safely and quickly without incident or injury is a testament to the importance of preparedness and training. In the coming months, we will continue to practice readiness drills for all sorts of emergencies with training and after-action reflection for teachers and students.
Education is preparedness training for all sorts of hazards and opportunities in life. We prepare to stay safe when things go wrong, and we prepare so that we are ready to take the initiative when an opportunity arises.
My daughter started her first day of college two days before our students.
Elizabeth Stone said of parenthood.
"Making the decision to have a child — it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." Village Voice.
I left my heart at Sam Houston State. The only solace I take with me is that I worked as hard as I could to prepare her for going alone. That being said, I still worry about how good of a job I did... and why she doesn't call.
The world's ills are too many to number, and the universe is really good at surprising us. Resiliency comes from being prepared for anything. Teaching kids to think on their feet and stay calm under pressure is instrumental in their future success. That we allow them the freedom to make mistakes, take risks, and do things they can do for themselves is our role in their preparedness.
Always Ready, Eagles!
