Model Your Talk
So often we talk about how we want people and our students to act.
The question is...are we modeling that same behavior ourselves?
The most powerful message comes from our behavior matching our words. How often do we get distracted by our phone, but tell our kids to put theirs down? Do we show a lack of respect, bad attitude, or display poor effort in front of our kids and then preach to them the opposite?
I cannot explain how many times I talk about not texting while you are driving. I was sitting at a stop light the other day when I decided to take advantage of the minute I was at a standstill, but taking out my phone to check a quick text. My son immediately called me on it. As I was starting to make the excuse that I was not moving, my son interrupted me with; "It doesn't matter daddy. You are still driving." So I stopped, thought about the example I was setting, and put the phone down (with a little bit of a bruised ego).
We often preach to our students about treating people with respect and yet how often are they with us when we do just the opposite whether in person or on the phone? Discussions about not feeling anxious or quitting in the face of hardship abound; yet we do not let them struggle long before running in to make an easier path for them. I often wonder if we put too many of our worries (as parents, educators, and leaders) or pre-conceived notions about situations or events on our students and children. They see that, know it, and are affected by everything we do (either to them or in front of them); no matter what we say.
We all want the best for those we are either raising or leading. So we need to send them the most powerful message possible by remembering that they are always watching more than listening.

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a social worker and an engineer. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459
Nurse - Mrs. Rok
The school nurses have been working on school safety and emergency response as a professional goal this school year. I am working with the Essential School Health Services (ESHS) Grant which provides some funding for the school nurses with some supplies. The grant has allowed us to order the CAT tourniquets and SWAT-T tourniquets for each school, the Athletic Trainer and Aquatic Director. Everyone has received training on “Stop the Bleed”. The nurses are all updating the emergency response supplies in our emergency bags.
In January, I held two CPR/AED for staff and certified 6 staff members. I also had a mock “Code Blue” drill with the students from the Lifeguarding Class which was quite successful and a great learning experience for all.
Seasonal allergies have started so please discuss with your doctor if your child needs to start his/her antihistamine regimen.
Pat Rok: My hours are 7:15 AM to 2PM. My phone number is (508) 336-7272 ext. 62119.
