Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year!
You Are Each Pockets of Light for Our Students & Community...
“For the start of the year,
it is the direction you set --
and not the speed at which you do it --
which is what matters most,
for both your students and for yourself on this journey."
-Alex Toussaint
Preparation for the 2022-23 School Year
With the school year right around the corner, Ed Services wanted to share important information to prepare and support staff for a successful start to the school year.
To be clear, the schedule for the upcoming week of August 8-12 will include the following:
- Aug. 8 -- District-Wide Staff Development @ NMHS, 8-3:30pm (schedule details below)
- Aug. 9 -- Teacher Workday
- Aug. 10 -- 1st Regular Day of the School Year with Students
- Aug. 11 -- 2nd Regular Day of School
- Aug. 12 -- Optional Spirit Day: All NUSD staff wear their new NUSD swag (from 8.08.22)
Please know NUSD recognizes the immense efforts that are needed by staff to begin a school year. We are in this together and stand united with all NTA and CSEA members.
We are excited and energized to begin the upcoming year. By supporting one another with open communication, NUSD is focused on continuing to foster strong, trusting relationships.
Our students and communities need each one of us; thank you for your dedication and resiliency on behalf of our students and for each other.
Each of you that makes up NUSD are indeed pockets of light for our students & families.
The journey ahead is a marathon, not a sprint. We're in this together, Newark.
In partnership,
Ariel

Aug. 8 PD Logistics
For the August 8 District-Wide PD below, please note the following below:
- All certificated staff should report to NMHS between 7:30-8:00am and a light breakfast will be provided. In order to ensure the safest environment possible, grade-level and department staff will have designated rooms and we will not meet as a large group.
- We will be starting the morning virtually at 8am in each designated classroom. Parts of the morning section of the day will be online (on Zoom) to enable staff to participate safely in one virtual space. Other parts of the morning will be facilitated in classrooms to enable colleagues from across the district to interact and learn from one another.
- Please see the agenda below for more details, times and spaces at NMHS.
- 3 parking options exist -- staff parking lot near STAR Lab; student parking lot in front of gymnasium; Newark Mall parking lot across from high school
- At 10:00am, we will have a virtual Keynote Speaker, Ronen Habib, from EQ Schools to focus on Culture and Climate and the importance of student and staff wellness.
- Lunch begins at 11:00am and will be provided at sites until 12:00pm.
- The afternoon session will occur from 12:00-3:30pm at sites. These will be led by principals to focus on site-specific Culture and Climate plans for the start of the school year.
- Optional: Both certificated & classified staff wear your new NUSD t-shirt on Aug. 12. :-)
