Retro Historic and iconic Marques in Greece
1966 Series IIa Land Rover - SWB Diesel
This is another 70% restoration, including just about everything cosmetic and although it seemed expedient at the time to go from hardtop to soft top - mainly because of the availability of the fabulous Exmoor Trim full canvas safari hood - we have also kept the hard top for the winter months. The suspension has been enhanced, and replaced - with nine leaf springs for the front and seven leaf springs for the rear - to better cope with some off- road trips in the Rhodopi.
Generally in good mechanical order, what was more important was to spray the vehicle to a very high standard, both inside and out. Having achieved this we then replaced the seats with Exmoor Trim seats, with a central lock box and 'double cup holder,' in order to bring it into the 21st Century. So now the driving section has new acoustic Exmoor Trim rubber flooring, and the rear part has been encased in aluminum ribbed sheeting, which gives the vehicle further work potential. There is also a rear dicky-seat.
With new European standard electrics throughout, including head lights fog lamps, flasher units, towing hookup, and internal lights; this has all been set off with new mirrors and full emergency kit, new jack and wheel brace.
This is a well tried and tested diesel unit with a standard 2286 cc diesel engine.
It has good steering and wheel alignment, an excellent gearbox with crisp forward gear changes, and once you get used to not having power assisted steering, you will want to drive it forever. With everyday rear wheel drive, it also has a 2 x 4 or 4 x 4 choice of format; in high and low ratio, both operated from inside the cab. Five very good town and country tires, good breaking system and full towing capability.
Not the fastest of vehicles, it still appeals to many, because in a Balkan agricultural setting, it has all the qualities needed to get about whatever the circumstances. Presently registered as a Classic Car in Greece it is on OEEO plates, and insured by Alliance.
