Camas Ridge Counseling Corner
December 14-18, 2020~Winter Break is Here
Personal Safety & Erin's Law
It is important for our children and youth to learn about personal safety. Just as we learn and practice emergency drills for fires and earthquakes, we must learn to establish personal boundaries, how to communicate our boundaries, and how to advocate for ourselves and others when those boundaries are crossed. These skills need to be learned and practiced.
This week, we have been teaching your students personal safety rules, such as the Protect Yourself Rules or Body Safety Rules.
It is important that all students:
- learn to recognize and attend to their 'uh-oh' feelings that signal discomfort and that something is not right
- what touches are considered safe vs. unsafe
- what to do when you or someone else has experienced unsafe touch
- learn why it is important to tell, even though it may feel scaring or were told to keep it "secret"
- identify a safety network; naming safe adults you could tell when you want to be heard/believed
- keep telling until you know someone is doing something to help.
These conversations are vital and continual throughout the years of education.
