Burchfield's Bulletin
May 8 - 12, 2017 (School Days 159-163)
Gratitude
I am also so thankful that while most of you are counting down to the end of school, your heart is still working to make sure our students are ready for next year. I hope that the final days will be solidifying the skills of the current year but also introducing the skills for next year. First, it is fun for kids to do work for the new year. Second, it gives kids the opportunity to get excited about what is to come. It may even encourage them to work this summer on those "new" skills. Finally, keep in mind that if we manage to get to the desired reading level or the math skills are introduced without TIME to practice and really move students' skills from working memory to long-term memory, the skills will probably disappear over the summer. We sometimes blame parents/summer for not maintaining all of the skills when the reality is the skills never went into a child's long term memory which allows for better retrieval later.
Karen Swint has done a great job this year especially for our T.A.G. students. Last week she provided a super showcase for her students' work. Each student group presented so well to their parents and virtual strangers (other parents) persuading information as they sought out investors in their products. What a fun and different kind of night the T.A.G. students and their families spent together. I really think the families really enjoyed the unique presentations and the opportunity to visit and share with each other throughout the evening. Thanks, Karen. (See pics below.)
In closing I want to say that I hope that each of you know how much you are appreciated. The sweet notes from students, the donuts, the cakes, the drinks, and other little goodies only scratch the surface of saying THANKS. What you do every single day changes lives not for the day but for lifetimes.

Be very clear with our parents about your particular calendars - assessments, field trips, and final projects of the year. Clarity helps parents accept reality. When we are vague, they can just say, "I didn't know." You know that can happen. If you have any other information that you think is pertinent to share with the "whole congregation" before the end of the year, write it up and send it to me, Thanks!
