Hays High School Celebrates our 2021 PEC scholarship recipients, Reef Doss and Victor Falcon
Principal's Message
Hello Hays High School Parents and Students,
This week we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. I want to say thank you to all of our teachers at Hays High School. Each of you plays a part in making our school a great place for kids. I am proud of the work you do day in and day out for our community. Parents and students, if you have a teacher you would like to thank, take a moment and send a thank you note, it goes a long way!
This week, we look at the concept of self-motivation. Finding out what motivates us and staying focused on our goals and making progress is important for a teenager’s psychological and emotional health. Each of us are motivated by different things: the satisfaction of a job well done, praise from peers or even money. No matter what motivates us, making sure you understand what motivates you and how you leverage that can make all the difference in the world. Check out the info below for more on motivation; there are two quick reads one for parents, one for students.

Wishing you all the best,
David R. Pierce

Make-Up Hours Information
Students: The end of the semester is fast approaching, and we want you to get all of your credits! As you know, in order to receive credit for a course, you must pass with a 70+ and not have more than 8 absences for the semester. For credit, attendance is counted through Schoology and in-person. If you are an in-person learner that logs in virtually through Schoology, you will not need to make up any hours. NOTE: This is for credit purposes and is different than our exam exemption policy
Semester Exam Exemption Criteria for grades 9-12 Spring 2021
Students can exempt all semester exams for all classes provided they meet:
Attendance requirement: In-person learners must not be absent more than three times (for any reason) between the periods of April 26 and the start of final exams on May 24. Virtual learners must not be marked absent more than three times during the same time period and must attend all Zoom/virtual meetings (virtual learners who do not log into Schoology and attend during the scheduled class time are considered absent).
Grade requirement: Students must have an average of 70 or higher for the 2nd semester
Discipline: No ISS, no Impact assignments for spring semester
Debt free: Must not owe any fees for lost textbooks, ID’s, etc.
Exemptions are class-to-class, meaning you could qualify to be exempt in some classes and not in others. If your student is coded as “in-person,” he/she must attend in-person; they cannot log in remotely and get attendance credit for exemptions. They must physically be present.
Effective Monday April 26th, everyone qualifies for semester exemptions if ALL above criteria are met. Students must also be present on exam days to qualify for each exemption.

What are our Hays High School students up to this week?
Students in Mr. Derek Poludniak's Government class are working on their end-of-semester projects. Students are creating their own TED Talks where students will record a 10 minute video on a topic that they deem themselves experts or advocates in.
Mr. Charles Flores's Treble Choir students worked to improve their sight reading skill sets by engaging in listening exercises and scale-interval drills.
Congratulations to the FFA Talent Team. They performed a 7 ½ minute country & western dance routine that won the honor of being named FFA District Champs. The FFA Talent Team will be advancing to Area competition next week. Please help us congratulate the team members: Dylan Welch, Dakota Dahlstrom, Zac Turk, Maggie Trevethan, Isaac Lawlor, Courtney Reeves, Lane Burch, Bianca Garcia, Weston Welch, Evelyn Jacobo and Julian Dominquez.
