November 14, 2021

Parent Teacher Conferences Continue through Nov.19th. School is out at 1:15 PM.

Report Cards: November 19th

Report cards will be shared with parents by Friday, November 19th via email or hard copy. Please remember your child's progress will be measured against the State Standards for the end of the school year. For this reason, the scores of 1 to 4 should not be equated to grades. This is very different from how we’ve measured progress in the past and can be confusing for parents. The expected score for a student at the first trimester is a 1 or 2, at the second trimester a 2 or 3, and at the end of the year a 3 or 4. Students whose progress is ahead of schedule may be given higher scores during the year, and students who exceed the standard at the end of the year may receive a 4.

You will also see more “N/A” marks on your child’s progress report. Oster and the Union School District have emphasized the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL), in response to the pandemic and because SEL teaches critical life skills. As a result, there is less time to cover all of the standards, and making an effort to do so would reduce the quality (depth) of learning and is stressful to students.

I encourage you to not measure your child’s progress against other children, whether they be peers or siblings. It’s much more valuable to evaluate their progress by how much they’ve grown and to help them to validate and as they become older to evaluate their own learning.

Traveling Out of the Country during the Upcoming Holidays?

Please note for families traveling out of the country for vacation, their child will be required to complete a 10-day quarantine (7 days with negative COVID test) once they get back.

The extra days students miss due to the quarantine will be considered unexcused absences. These days are not the same as having to quarantine from school due to COVID.

Students missing more than five to fourteen days can request a short-term independent study contract by contacting Mrs. Mace in the Oster front office.

Parent Safety Patrol Help Needed

Oster is in need of a few parents to help support during pick-up times. We need to increase our supervision staff to ensure student safety in our loading zone. If you are available from 2:35-2:55 one or more days per week or want more information about the open position, please send an email to Ellen Mace at macee@unionsd.org

Parent Volunteers are so important, and our teachers appreciate your time so much! Thank you.

The winning design will be featured on the front cover.

We are looking for original artwork on 8.5 x 11 paper. Designs need to be hand-drawn. Most importantly designs must include the school name: Oster Elementary, and school year: 2021-2022 with everything spelled correctly.
