VHS Newsletter
March 2022
From the Principal, Dr. Tobon
Viking Families and Friends,
Well, Spring has arrived and with it are beautiful sounds of birds singing bright and early in the morning. Before everyone heads off for a week of rest and relaxation, here is an update of things happening around the schoolhouse.
Counselors have finished individual scheduling meetings with all students for the 2022-2023 school year. Parents and students should reach out to counselors with any questions about schedule requests. Schedule confirmations will be available in Skyward by May. The VHS Summer School transportation form and fee information was sent this week to parents whose students have summer course requests. If your student missed the summer school registration window but is interested in taking summer school, then contact your student’s counselor to inquire about available courses.
There are many things to celebrate at VHS, but here are just a few highlights. The VHS yearbook, Valenian, earned an “Excellent” rating from the Indiana High School Press Association and was awarded a status of Hoosier Star Finalist. We had over 50 students who received one or more Gold Ratings at the ISSMA State Vocal/Piano Solo and Ensemble Contest that was held in mid-February at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis. The VHS Drama Club recently held four nights of Mocha Madness. Valpo Unified coaches and two VHS administrators participated in the Polar Plunge, which collected over $3,000 to donate to the Special Olympics. The following five students were named District Award Winners of the American Legion Americanism and Government Program: Audrey Barriball, Ezekiel Bloom, Brady Ho, John Kroeger, and Ruth Lopez. Needless to say, our Vikings are representing Valpo well.
Finally, the Valpo Schools Foundation is happy to announce that they are accepting applications for the first-ever Most Valuable Viking. All teachers and classified staff (which includes bus drivers, custodians, food service, maintenance, paraprofessionals, and secretaries) may be nominated for this recognition. If you know of a teacher and/or staff member who exemplifies the qualities listed below, then I ask that you please take some time and consider nominating them for the Most Valuable Viking.

Sal Muffoletto
I have taught at VHS for 7 years. I teach Spanish II, Spanish V, Spanish V AP/IB/DC. I also sponsor the National Spanish Honor Society Oscar Romero Chapter here at VHS. I coach our Spanish students participating in the Indiana Spanish Olympiad. Our school is a special place to work and to learn! I really like working alongside a talented group of educators here at VHS, but most of all, I really like working with our stellar students! An interesting fact about me is that in addition to speaking English and Spanish, I also speak Italian, and I travel to Sicily to visit my grandmother and relatives when I get the chance!
