A few quick things about this week...
Reading
This week we are continuing our LEAD 21 Unit - Achieving Dreams. We are focusing on making deep connections to help us better understand what we are reading. By the end of the week, students will be able to make deep connections using their own schema (personal experience, previous texts read, etc.) and their current piece of text to explain how they are connected and why it helps them understand the story/plot or characters better.
This week students will be asked to focus on specific strategies while reading independently.
- Making "Deep" Connections
- Identifying Text Structure
- Summarizing (Somebody, Wanted, But, So...)
Ask me about: How and why do readers make deep connections when they read text? What is the difference between a surface connection and a deep connection?
Writing
We will continue to explore the genre of poetry this week because April is National Poetry Month! We will be writing our own variety of poems this week, and will ultimately be working towards publishing our own poetry books using Microsoft SWAY! Please be aware, your child may have homework that requires them to log in to Office 365 that they are responsible for completing prior to Friday!
Throughout our unit, students will:
- Create images using sensory details
- Incorporate figurative language
- Use rhythm and rhyme in poetry
- Recognize the differences in the conventional language rules of poetry
- Write detailed descriptions of people, places, and ideas
- Use mentor authors to create and improve writing
- Utilize conferencing feedback to revise and edit writing
- Write with stamina
Ask me about: What are the elements of poetry? How does a writer generate a topic for a poem? How does a writer enhance their poetry?
What you can do: Ask your child to share the various types of poems we will be writing this week with you in their Writer's Notebooks.
Not sure what to write about in your Writer's Notebook? Check some of these prompts out!
Math
We will be continuing Unit #10 - Relections, Rotations, & Symmetry. We will be focusing on identifying lines of symmetry, reflections, rotations, and translations this week. Please be aware your child will have their Unit #10 Test tentatively Wednesday, May 10th.
Ask me about: What are reflections, rotations, and translations?

Ask me about: What are each of the parts of the water cycle? How does the water cycle work?
What you can do: The next time it rains, ask your child to describe what is happening, where the water is going, and why.
