September 2023
We are in Full swing!
Dear Rosa Parks Family,
It’s hard to believe we have finished the second week of school and it was fabulous. We thank you for your support and patience, especially with transportation.
The first few weeks of school we will be focusing on routines and school procedures, navigating the school building, safety protocols, and goal setting for all grade levels. Our students have been busy! In third grade, students have been exploring place value, going into the thousands. Our fifth graders have been learning about the Earth’s core in Science. Our fourth graders had the opportunity to share some interesting facts they know about Virginia to Dr. McDade, PWCS Superintendent, when she visited on the first day of school.
Attendance matters here at Rosa Parks ES and at PWCS. The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are most likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Missing as little as 2 days a month can have a huge impact on a student’s academic success.
Thank you again for your support! We look forward to seeing all of you at our two Back to School Events later this month. K-2 will have their Back to School Night on Tuesday, September 26th at 6pm and Grades 3-5 will have their Back to School Night on Thursday, September 28th at 6pm.
This year’s theme is “Adventure Awaits” and we can’t wait for all the new and exciting adventures this year will bring!
Sincerely,
Kathryn Ngo, Principal
Maria Menjivar, Assistant Principal

IB Learner Profile Attribute of the Month – Caring
Every month we will focus on one of IB Learner Profile Attributes. There are 10 in all. In September, we will turn our focus on caring. In the family newsletter, you’ll find books that tie into the attribute as well as ways to re-enforce the featured attribute at home.
Students who are CARING show compassion and respect the feelings of others. They act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and to the environment. They remember to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated.
Literature Connection: Have you Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.
Historical Connection in Virginia: Maggie Lena Walker (1864-1934), the first African American female bank president in the United States when she founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903. Walker helped improve the economic base of the African American community in Richmond. She also led a city-wide boycott against segregated streetcars. She was a supporter of women’s suffrage and voter registration drives.
Family Connections
Ask your child how they have been caring at school.
Brainstorm ways your family can get involved in the community.
Ask your child how someone showed kindness to them and how they felt.
