Raymond Central Public Schools
January 2020
From the Desk of the Superintendent
Happy New Year! I hope this newsletter finds each of our students and families ready for a FANTASTIC second semester. We have been fortunate this winter to avoid major weather patterns, I hope this trend continues. Remember, if a school related decision has to be made, a phone call, email, and text message will be sent to PowerSchool contacts. The school will also contact local media to post. While every situation is different, the school will work hard to make a timely decision.
It is always a pleasure to recognize six volunteers, who work hard for our students, staff, families, and community - our elected school board members: Dr. Harriet Gould, Scott Black, Lori Springer, Matt Blanchard, Brad Breitkreutz, and Cathy Burklund. The Board meets regularly to support and enable our educational mission, vision, strategic plan, and they advocate for continuous improvement to our district. Members participate in endless board, committee, negotiation, and other meetings, make appearances at school functions, and spend hours reviewing reports, agendas, proposals, and other information they receive weekly. When you see one of our six board members, be sure to thank them for their commitment to making Raymond Central a great place to learn as we celebrate their leadership February 9-15, 2020.
Through the strategic planning process and the hard work of many community members, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and Board members, new district goals were developed for 2019-2025. In the next several newsletters, I will be highlighting one goal area and including district activities/initiatives that came out of the input from the Vision 2025 roundtable discussions (last year), the RC 360 Superintendent Evaluation, culture and climate survey data, teacher exit surveys, and daily conversations around our fantastic school district. For strategic goal number seven, mental health action plan, the following performance indicators have been created:
Performance Indicator (1): Provide ongoing professional development in mental health issues for staff, students, parents and community.
Performance Indicator (2): Develop and implement a progress monitoring evaluation tool for RC mental health programs: Move This World Social/Emotional Curriculum (PK-6); mental health therapist (7-12); other.
Goal number seven has been a priority for Raymond Central Public Schools to increase our mental health and social emotional resources for students. Our goal is to improve access to diagnostic and treatment for the mental health problems of our students. As we continue to develop and improve our current model, we have taken steps forward with a 2 tier approach. The first tier is to provide a wide variety of activities for students. A sense of student “connectedness”to schools has been found to have a positive effect on academic achievement and to decrease risky behaviors. The first tier will evolve over time and will always be based on student interest. Providing additional activities outside of the classroom also provides an avenue for staff to develop positive relationships with students and staff to showcase additional talents they have outside of the classroom.
The second tier consists of targeted mental health services that are designed to equip students with skills and tools to engage successful in social, academic, and daily activities. Raymond Central has invested in a PK-6 curriculum called “Move This World.” Students in grades PK-6 receive 10 minutes of daily curriculum and activities focused to encourage, enhance, and build safe and supportive learning environments. Through the video exercises, students develop social skills and strengthen emotional intelligence. At the secondary level, the district has invested in an onsite mental health therapist that works with individuals and small groups of students. This service is currently offered one day per week, however, will move to two days for the 2020-21 school year.
The next step in goal seven is to implement a universal screener for students to help identify with social emotional needs. The district is committed to providing all the resources necessary for students to be successful. This goal is a work in progress, however, several proactive steps have been made over the past year. While a school nurse may not fall under the parameters of goal seven, the district is looking to add a position beginning in the 2020-21 school year as health needs for students continues to rise.
For February, I will share and discuss the work the district is doing in regard to the staff professional development for 2019-2025.
