A Note From the Principal
Hello Wabash Community!
April is here! Some of the trees and bulbs are blooming and the warmer sunshine is coming our way! Coming out of the winter season and seeing new life around us is quite refreshing and rejuvenating! Please remember to send your child with a jacket or long sleeve top for outside recess on these cooler spring days.
3rd Quarter Report Cards will be sent home via email this Friday, April 1. We are moving forward into the 4th Quarter. We look forward to supporting and challenging our students as we prepare them for the next grade level that is right around the corner.
We will be taking part in the State of Missouri Assessment Program this May. This test is called the MAP test. The MAP test will be as follows: 3rd and 5th graders will test May 2nd-May 6th. 4th and 6th graders will test May 9th-May 13th. We are excited to have our students show all that they know and give their best! We do not expect our kids to be perfect, we just expect them to give their best!
As stated above, we are moving into our 4th and final Quarter of the school year. This week, I shared with our students the message and importance of finishing strong! Finishing strong is applicable and important in life in a wide variety of ways, whether it be at home, at work, or in sports. Our collective school goal is to continue to work on our learning goals each and every day. Please take time to talk with your child(ren) as well to reinforce the importance of this message. Again, we do not expect our children to be perfect, but we want their best focus and effort until the last day of school. WABASH WILL FINISH STRONG!
Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts!

Updated Safety Measures
Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is in our building at all times, so we have rolled out a system to allow us to do just that. WSD visitors will check in to our buildings using Raptor, a new visitor management system designed to assist with building security.
What does that mean for you?
When you arrive at a WSD building as a visitor, you will be asked to scan your ID, take a photo and complete the management system’s check-in process.
Raptor will screen the information against sex offender databases and locally customized lists of banned or potentially threatening individuals, instantly alert school officials to a threatening presence, and maintain a searchable log of all visitors.
Once approved, you will get a customized visitor badge to wear while in the building.
Thank you for your support as we roll this out and enhance school safety protocols!
Parents or guardians who are only picking up a child for the day will not need to use the visitor management system.
Kindergarten Screening and Registration
Dates have been set for the Wentzville School District’s kindergarten screening process. This event is for all children who will turn five BEFORE August 1, 2022.
Parents are asked to register online using the Quick Registration and Screening form. If your child has not been screened at the Parents as Teachers office or his/her preschool this year, appointments are required and can be made when you register online.
Screening appointments are available in the morning and evening and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be sure to check your address with the District’s Boundary Locator tool to determine which school your child will attend before registering your child for kindergarten.
All screening appointments will occur at the Parents as Teachers Office at One Campus Drive, Wentzville, MO 63385.
Your information will be sent to your child’s elementary school. The school will contact you to complete your child's kindergarten registration. To access a list of necessary materials and documents for registration, please visit the District website. For additional information about kindergarten registration and screening, or to check if your child has a current screening on file, please contact the Parents as Teachers Office at 636-327-3863, ext. 22281.
If you do not have a Missouri birth certificate, you may obtain one for $15 from the St. Charles County Community Health/Environment-Vital Statistics Office, 1650 Boone’s Lick, St. Charles, MO 63301, or by calling (636) 949-7558 for more information.

Develop a Sleep Routine - Why Enough Sleep is Important
Getting enough sleep is critical for a child to be successful in school. Children who do not get enough sleep have difficulty concentrating and learning as well as they can.
Set a consistent bedtime for your child and stick with it every night. Having a bedtime routine that is consistent will help your child settle down and fall asleep. Components of a calming pre-bedtime routine may involve a bath/shower, reading with them, and tucking them in and saying good-night to them.
Have your child turn off electronic devices well before bedtime (about an hour before)
Try to have the home as quiet and calm as possible when younger children are trying to fall asleep.
Insufficient sleep is associated with lower academic achievement in middle school, high school and college, as well as higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness. The optimal amount of sleep for most younger children is 10-12 hours per night and for adolescents (13-18 year of age) is in the range of 8-10 hours per night .
The Effects of Too Much Screen Time
Today’s children have grown up with a vast array of electronic devices at their fingertips. They can’t imagine a world without smartphones, tablets, and the internet.

The Power of Affirmations
“Good job!”... “I like the way you never give up”... “I know I can do this because I'm brave”...Affirmations can literally be defined as statements or messages of emotional support or encouragement. Simple words and phrases, made as self-statements, direct statements or even indirect/ “overheard'' comments can brighten your student’s outlook on school, homelife and life in general. As described by Catherine Moore of Positive Psychology.com, these easy yet powerful messages can help to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts.
There is actually science that backs up the impact positive affirmations can have on us all. But, don’t take my word for it, put it to the test with those around you. Here’s a few suggestions to get you started:
State out loud to your student how impressed you are with your student’s progress in a certain area such as academics or behaviors. For example, “Billy, your teacher emailed and said you had a great week staying on task. I knew you could do it because you are so good at focusing during soccer practice”, affirming your belief in their ability to achieve focusing on a task.
Let your child “overhear” you expressing to your spouse or partner how impressed you are by their ability to overcome or achieve something. “Did you see that email from Mr. Schulte? I’m not surprised Joelle helped the new student grab their lunch today because she’s always been helpful to the kids in her class.” This can add a layer of authenticity to your affirmation because you’ve shared it with someone else.
Author an affirmation for a specific situation your student faces. For example: “I know you’re anxious going into school in the mornings. Please say with me, ‘I can do this because I am brave’ ”. Repeat constructed statements like that to help “debunk” the negative, unhelpful thoughts that may accompany certain situations.

LATE START SUPERVISION
The WSD will once again be providing supervision for K-6 students who need to be dropped off at the regular start time on scheduled Late Start Days in the 2020-2021 school year. This is separate from our Before Care Program through Chautauqua, so if you are registered for Chautauqua, please DO NOT register for Late Start Supervision.
The fee is $10 per child for each late start day you would like to register for. Please fill out the REGISTRATION FORM first prior to paying. If you choose to use PayPal, there is a sliding scale charge assessed to cover processing costs. You also have the option to send a check in to your child's school. In order to arrange for adequate staffing, you must register and pay before the deadline for each late start day (deadline is one week prior to each late start). You may also register for all late start dates one time by choosing the dates you need in the registration form.
