Planning For 20-21
Safety patrol 20 / 21
Attention Fourth Graders - are you interested in Safety Patrol next year?
The school Safety Patrol was established in 1935 by the San Diego Police Department and began just one school. Its purpose was to assist elementary school children across uncontrolled intersections on their way to and from school and to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle collisions involving elementary age students.
Mission: The mission of S.S.P. is to promote the safe crossing of elementary students to and from school and to provide classroom education to maximize the safety of students at all times.
The School Safety Patrol is in nearly 90 schools throughout the city. Fifth grade students make up nearly 1,000 SSP members whose job it is to cross children and adults safely at their school locations. They are selected, trained, and supervised on an ongoing basis by our School Resource Officer. Their jobs include:
- Control pedestrian traffic
- Control vehicle traffic
- Watch and report traffic violations
The WWES Safety Patrol provides our students safe crossing of Matinal Drive 15 minutes before and after school. The selected students show an honest effort in school, and are positive role models for other students. They are selected on the basis of academic performance, citizenship, and maturity. They demonstrate the willingness to take responsibilities and give our children the safety they need.
Please follow the link to submit an application if you are interested in becoming a Safety Patrol Member.
We are also looking for parent volunteers to support this program.

Counseling Corner by Mrs. Zucchet
One of my favorite things to teach students is the concept of reframing. Reframing helps people learn to look at situations from a slightly different perspective. The circumstance we find ourselves in right now is giving us ample opportunities to practice reframing. For instance, rather than focus on all that seems bleak right now, we can shift our attention to all that is positive about these very unique times.
Our children are getting to strengthen skills right now that will serve them the rest of their lives. They are learning how to be flexible and adaptable. They are learning how to deal with change and uncertainty. They are learning how to manage uncomfortable emotions like fear, sadness, frustration and anxiety. This is definitely a time our children will always remember. And perhaps, they will look back and realize that they were given an opportunity to grow and develop in ways they would not have had if this pandemic never occurred. Below is a post that has circulated online which expresses this sentiment so beautifully that I wanted to share it with those of you who might not have seen it yet. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

MATERIALS DISTRIBUTION
LIBRARY BOOKS
Students, please return library books. Email Mrs. Whitelock at nwhitelock@powayusd.com to let her know you have a library book to return. There will be a box outside in front of the library curbside for you to return your library books on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11-1 next week. Thank you!
YEARBOOK UPDATE
We are sorry to announce that yearbook distribution will be delayed. The following message was received from Jostens.
“Unfortunately, the pandemic has required the plant that makes your products to temporarily close to comply with government health orders. While we have shifted work to plants that remain operational where possible, our capacity is limited. As a result of this, we will be extending shipping dates for some of our customers. At this point, we believe your yearbooks will ship June 24th. If we can possibly ship them earlier, we will contact you and let you know. We truly appreciate our customers, and thank you for your understanding as we navigate through these unprecedented times.”
They will attempt to get us yearbooks sooner, but they cannot guarantee anything. When yearbooks come in, we will make arrangements for distribution.
Thanks for your patience.
